So Demon Slayer debuted ahead of Metroid after all.
PlayStation software takes half of the top ten. That's a rare sight.

It's a Aniplex game, not Sega.
Sega only got the rights to publish it outside Japan.

I never did understand that since Sony owns Aniplex, I wonder why Sony just didn't publish it themselves in the West.

Aniplex is under Sony Music, which acts rather independently of Sony Interactive Entertainment (PlayStation). For instance, there is an Aniplex title that is a Switch exclusive release.
Interesting results all around. OLED is obviously under huge supply constraints. Demon Slayer debuted at about the same level as Metroid Dread. I wasn't sure if one title would completely dominate the other. In the end, this is fairly close and its going to come down to legs.
One thing I was fairly sure of though is that Demon Slayer sales would be almost entirely on PS4. The PS5 version sold less than a quarter of what the PS4 version sold. It is very likely that the PS5 version will also have worse legs. Demon Slayer's performance will almost entirely depend on how well it continues to do on PS4.
curl-6 bet me that PS5 + X|S sales would reach 56m before year end 2023 and he was right.
My Bet With curl-6

Yeah that's what I feel is kinda strange actually. Both SIE and Sony Music are two divisions both wholly owned by Sony Group. Why would Sony Music act independently like that when SIE is the main branch for the game division and to make some Switch exclusives as well.
From a business stand point, it just seems weird to me is all. Especially after seeing Sony leverage their relationship with Marvel and Spiderman to get that IP exclusive to them for games and they only own the movie rights to that IP. Now with Demon Slayer, Sony has the movie rights and have game publishing rights through one of it's divisions even though it's not SIE. I would think Sony as a whole would be more ubiquitous among its different branches and at least published the game themselves in the West, especially with the amount of competition these days.
I am hoping that the OLED supply was much greater in the west, because these numbers are lower than I had anticipated initially. 70k in Japan means that the Switch may not crack 400k this week (Japan is often around .25-.33 of Switch' total sales). My estimate for the week of 10-17th was 500k, but it looks like that's not likely to happen.

The COMG result just came out: 103 points for Demon Slayer 176 points for Lost Judgement Even with a best case scenario the game might not surpass 120K first week, Lost Judgement managed 145K So now with both Amazon.co.jp and COMG confirming the trends we observed with pre-orders/launch perhaps I might end up right. In terms of it being a casual IP it might have done well if it was on the Switch, for a long time few casual games have done well on the PS ecosystem especially games that are popular among kids and women, that audience is severally lacking on the PS and few games cater to them. Also next time you are tracking Amazon.co.jp keep track of two things does it go out of stock and how long a game remains 1st place after it launches, if it's already declining by Sunday it means sales were front-ended and demand is already pretty much satisfied. Metroid as an example managed to keep it's first place into Tuesday of it's second week, meaning that demand wasn't entirely satisfied and it even went out of stock. It's probable that Dread outsold the PS5 version of Demon Slayer and will easily surpass the lifetime sales of both version when it's all said and done. Momotaro was a very casual IP didn't stop it from charting very high on Amazon.co.jp for a very long time after it launched, |
Like I mentioned in last weeks thread Demon Slayer launched below Lost Judgement, and also doesn't have as good WoM as Lost Judgement I expect a far bigger second week drop:
Famitsu Sales: Week 40, 2021 (Sep 27 - Oct 03)
03./01. [PS4] Lost Judgment <ADV> (Sega) {2021.09.24} (¥8.290) - 20.393 / 132.245 <80-100%> (-82%)
24./03. [PS5] Lost Judgment <ADV> (Sega) {2021.09.24} (¥8.290) - 3.433 / 36.584 <60-80%> (-90%)
Lost Judgement doesn't have good legs in anyway shape or form but I think Demon Slayer is heading for a second week of below 12K on the PS4 and below 3K on the PS5. Honestly retailers would be lucky to sell even 150K copies of the initial shipment at full price.
Expect a Switch version very soon, probably before the end of March
Xbox Series X|S continues to increase its lead over the Xbox One launch aligned and it gets closer to its lifetime sales.
