Forums - Movies & TV - Avatar Becomes the Top Grossing Film of all Time Once Again

Avatar was re-released in China, over 11 years after its initial release. It has grossed nearly 50 million USD so far, enough to retake the top position on the global world wide top charts. Incidentally, re-release numbers alone surpassed Disney's Mulan Chinese box office total.

1 Avatar $2,833,736,063 2009
2 Avengers: Endgame $2,797,501,328 2019
3 Titanic $2,201,647,264 1997

Despite its 11+ year old age, and status as a re-release, it has been managing to top the Chinese Daily Box Office chart.

I just noticed that when I checked out The Numbers a couple of days ago. Also Hi, Mom still has a chance of becoming the highest grossing foreign film of all time since its theatrical run in China has been extended until mid April and it will get released in other markets soon.

Round 3 goes to Blue Zoe Saldana. Wonder how long Disney will wait before letting Green Zoe Saldana back into the ring.

Avatar deserves the number one spot

2009 not a lot of people were born yet endgame was released 10 years later of course a billion children would wanna watch endgame

Endgame is part of a massive franchise, is a direct sequel, and doesn't have the novelty of the original Avatar. I have a hard time believing any Endgame re-releases will drum up much excitement.

I also expect an Avatar re-release in more territories before Avatar 2 comes out (if it ever does). So I think Avatar will stay on top for a while.

Plus Hollywood studios have decided to sacrifice the box office to the altar of streaming subscribers.

Don't really care much about what movie holds the record for highest grossing, but I love the idea of older movies being rereleased. There are a lot of movies I'd like to see in theatres again.

What happened to the Avatar sequels? They've been in development hell for years, are they still even being made?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Ugh, such a lame thing to be #1. Endgame is barely better in that regard though, I like Infinity War much more. Of the top 3, Titanic deserves it most.

I always hated that metric, it's more important to see how many people went to see the movie rather than how much it grossed.

Yeah, well, China is a big market. Because how things were back then, Avatar is a new movie for the moviegoers in China and they have defeated the pandemic basically there so few restrictions in place.

"re-release numbers alone surpassed Disney's Mulan Chinese box office total"
Yeah, well. The Mulan live action movie flopped in China. China made their own Mulan movie a few years back: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1308138/reference
