NS - 26

PS4 - 4

Still nothing from PS5.

I never see this domination in one market. How many weeks NS have 25+/30?

06./05. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} (¥5.980) - 13.575 / 3.699.547 (+1%)
07./04. [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons # (Nintendo) {2020.03.20} (¥5.980) - 13.332 / 6.668.414 (-3%)

I think that's the first time since Animal Crossing came out that Mario Kart has beaten it head-to-head.

Stole my post!

MK8 Deluxe is also only 76k behind Splatoon 2 now. With a 4.5k lead this week, only about 17 more weeks until it passes it.

I think that's the first time since Animal Crossing came out that Mario Kart has beaten it head-to-head.

Looks like the sales domination from AC:NH is slowly coming to an end. Considering all the records it broke during it's reign, it can retire peacefully.

Loo at PS5 go! But wonder how long it can do that. I think most of the numbers are due to previous shortages, so I cannot see this sustainable.

Switch is just Switch. It will be tough to match last year's March and April, seeing as Animal Crossing was an absolute monster

Nice to see PS5 getting more stock.

[...] Decent hardware sales are better than bad hardware and software sales, but what we are seeing right now still can't be encouraging for Japanese third parties who want to develop PS5 games.

And that is the main point. I think everyone agrees the PS can sell big numbers worldwide without the japanese market. But the japanese game devs are still important in this gaming age, and therefore the japanese market is still important. If PS loses exclusivity to typical japanese game franchises, it starts to look very similar to Xbox. And that is probably bad for some of the classic PS fanbase.

Yep.  Something to keep in mind is XBox/Playstation in Generation 7 vs. Generation 8.  XBox 360 ended up with most Japanese games on it.  On the other hand, Japanese devs often didn't bother with the XB1.  Persona 5 released in 2016 and never made it to any XBox, for example.  One big thing that differentiated PS4 from XB1 were the Japanese 3rd party games.  PS3 wasn't really differentiated from XB360 in this way.  Consequently, PS3 and XB360 sold about the same amount worldwide, while PS4 clearly dominated the XB1.

Bravely series

[3DS] Bravely Default (Square Enix) {2012.10.11} (¥6,090) - 295,902 / 144,909
[3DS] Bravely Second: End Layer (Square Enix) {2015.04.23} (¥5,980) - 167,489 / 97,220
[NSW] Bravely Default II (Square Enix) {2021.02.26} (¥6,800) - 93,061 / 93,061
[3DS] Bravely Default: For the Sequel (Square Enix) {2013.12.05} (¥4,990) - 80,143 / 36,990

Story of Seasons series

[NDS] Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness (Marvelous Interactive) {2007.02.01} (¥5,040) - 304,660 / 70,980
[3DS] Harvest Moon: A New Beginning (Marvelous AQL) {2012.02.23} (¥5,040) - 264,042 / 79,809
[3DS] Harvest Moon: Linking the New World (Marvelous AQL) {2014.02.27} (¥5,040) - 259,111 / 116,922
[NDS] Harvest Moon: Twin Villages (Marvelous Entertainment) {2010.07.08} (¥5,040) - 212,870 / 65,074
[NSW] Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town (Marvelous) {2021.02.25} (¥5,980) - 202,396 / 202,396

So it seems that both new titles have cannibalized each other. That's a pity.

Octopath Traveler has sold more than Bravely Default II in launch week in Japan, despite a much smaller install base. The game isn't that bad – not as good as Ocotpath, but not that bad.
