Loo at PS5 go! But wonder how long it can do that. I think most of the numbers are due to previous shortages, so I cannot see this sustainable.

Switch is just Switch. It will be tough to match last year's March and April, seeing as Animal Crossing was an absolute monster

Nice to see PS5 getting more stock.

yeah the main reason that they are comparing wii U to ps5 is becasue... japan was by far the wii U's most healthy market, to the point that it took the ps4 untill basically the announcement of the switch for it to catch up, as you can see...

The main reason why people compare the PS5 to the Wii U is that the Wii U was a failure. There was nothing healthy about the Wii U in Japan as you should be able to tell from lifetime sales of ~3.3m.

The PS5 is tracking behind the PS4 which itself tracked behind the Wii U for a long time, not just in the above graph, but also launch-aligned. Anytime a new console is compared to a failure, it's about making the point how bad the current sales are.

What the PS5 is doing right now is make up for the initial shortages. You can tell from @TruckOSaurus comparison tables that the PS4 didn't taper off to its eventual weekly baseline until it had hit ~500k LTD, so the PS5's current 400k+ LTD is still below the threshold where the entirety of the initial demand should be fulfilled. Taking this a bit further though, there are PS5 shortages in the rest of Asia too, so a good chunk of the PS5s sold in Japan are bound to be leaving the country immediately, hence why physical PS5 software isn't charting in Japan's top 30. In that sense, the current PS5 hardware sales don't paint an accurate picture of the health of the ecosystem in Japan. Decent hardware sales are better than bad hardware and software sales, but what we are seeing right now still can't be encouraging for Japanese third parties who want to develop PS5 games.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

And that is the main point. I think everyone agrees the PS can sell big numbers worldwide without the japanese market. But the japanese game devs are still important in this gaming age, and therefore the japanese market is still important. If PS loses exclusivity to typical japanese game franchises, it starts to look very similar to Xbox. And that is probably bad for some of the classic PS fanbase.

Yep.  Something to keep in mind is XBox/Playstation in Generation 7 vs. Generation 8.  XBox 360 ended up with most Japanese games on it.  On the other hand, Japanese devs often didn't bother with the XB1.  Persona 5 released in 2016 and never made it to any XBox, for example.  One big thing that differentiated PS4 from XB1 were the Japanese 3rd party games.  PS3 wasn't really differentiated from XB360 in this way.  Consequently, PS3 and XB360 sold about the same amount worldwide, while PS4 clearly dominated the XB1.

Bravely series

[3DS] Bravely Default (Square Enix) {2012.10.11} (¥6,090) - 295,902 / 144,909
[3DS] Bravely Second: End Layer (Square Enix) {2015.04.23} (¥5,980) - 167,489 / 97,220
[NSW] Bravely Default II (Square Enix) {2021.02.26} (¥6,800) - 93,061 / 93,061
[3DS] Bravely Default: For the Sequel (Square Enix) {2013.12.05} (¥4,990) - 80,143 / 36,990

Story of Seasons series

[NDS] Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness (Marvelous Interactive) {2007.02.01} (¥5,040) - 304,660 / 70,980
[3DS] Harvest Moon: A New Beginning (Marvelous AQL) {2012.02.23} (¥5,040) - 264,042 / 79,809
[3DS] Harvest Moon: Linking the New World (Marvelous AQL) {2014.02.27} (¥5,040) - 259,111 / 116,922
[NDS] Harvest Moon: Twin Villages (Marvelous Entertainment) {2010.07.08} (¥5,040) - 212,870 / 65,074
[NSW] Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town (Marvelous) {2021.02.25} (¥5,980) - 202,396 / 202,396

So it seems that both new titles have cannibalized each other. That's a pity.

Octopath Traveler has sold more than Bravely Default II in launch week in Japan, despite a much smaller install base. The game isn't that bad – not as good as Ocotpath, but not that bad.

No, absolutely not. Japanese games were not the reason that the PS3 and X360 sold about the same. And the lack of them on the Xbox One was definitely not the reason the PS4 outsold the XB1 so heavily.

It's one of the big reasons.

In Generation 7, the XBox360 did well because:
-It had better first party support than XB1
-It had almost the same 3rd party games as PS3 (both Japanese and Western)
-It was often priced better than PS3

-In Generation 8, the XB1 did not do nearly as well because:
-It had inferior first party support than XBox360
-The PS4 had more 3rd party exclusives (especially from Japan)
-It was priced worse than PS4 at launch, and about the same shortly after that

The main things that matter are software and price.  The PS4 had quite a few games that the XB1 didn't.  The two systems are so similar in a lot of other ways, that the games that are exclusives end up being an obvious advantage.  A lot of those exclusives were Japanese 3rd party games.

How is there no PS5 games making it in the top 10 with 33k.. still great to see it start to pick up a little. Previous stocks were alarming, this is okay.
Nintendo is definitely holding on stocks for the MH launch. It is still doing better than last year tho.
Wish BD2 would have crossed the 100k milestone, although it will with digital. So with that it should be on par with the original game i think.
SoS, great numbers.

There haven't even been PS5 games in the top 30, not in 2021.  I have to wonder if these systems would still sell as well without backwards compatibility.  It seems like the PS4 is still tracking ahead of PS5 sales and it was not backwards compatible.  I don't think it had any notable games at launch either.  Some people simply want to buy a new Playstation for no good reason.

Yea feel like people are just playing the PS4 select titles that are free with the console.

and the "299 of ps4"

In stationary 8th console gen, Nintendo and Microsoft make many missteps.
