Okami is a beautiful game with a classic story and excellent gameplay. It feels just great to roam around as a wolf, fight demons and help the people free the land from the demonic influences. You play as the sun goddess Ameratasu in the form of the white wolf Shiranui and you wield the godly brush with which you can influence the environment: you can make plants bloom, put the sun in the sky, repair broken stuff and so on.

The game looks absolutely gorgeous. I think never saw I used the cel shading technique used in a better way. There are so many details in this too. But it is not just the cell-shaded art-style. It is the way nature is restored through your actions. It is how the humans fit in so well with the nature. Even details like running let's plants grow in your path feel right.

Gameplay is somewhat close to the Zelda formula, although you obviously doesn't wield a sword. But you have to solve quests, fight enemies and find secret stuff to overall free the land and bring nature back. This includes some interesting boss fights. Besides that you explore the lands. Movement is so fluid, alone running and jumping around is quite fun. I absolutely loved the wolf-form in Twilight Princess, but Okami made it even better. The classical Zelda-items are replaced by the divine brush, which works great as well.

Sadly the title released at the end of the PS2 lifetime did not great and Capcom closed down Clover Studios after this title. Still, the game developed a cult following and always did great with the reviewers, so over time Capcom rereleased the title again and again. So now you can play it basically everywhere - and you totally should.

I'm surprised no one put it together by now.

#9 - The last game in this series to always play the full jingle for every power-up you get.
Hint 2 - It was also the last game in this franchise to be released before the passing of one of its co-creators.
Hint 3 - And it was the last 2D game in the series to be released for a home console.
Hint 4 - This was originally supposed to be the last game in a trilogy, hence why there was a hiatus between this and next releases.

#8 - The final boss is... umm, a movie actress.

9. A Link to the Past

Same. I could see how they'd fit but then I could see how these questions wouldn't fit. I guess we'll see.

For a quite time Square gave us trailers and early trailer for a project codenamed Octopath Traveler, without a decision on the final name. And each time it looked sweeter and sweeter. Finally they decided to take the codename as final name and released a great turn based RPG, with many things taken from the experiences in the past and what worked so great in these games, but also with lessons learned and modernized things. This both for the gameplay mechanics and the graphic.

I think the most discussion was about the artstyle and graphics of these games. Detractors said it is old graphics. But don't be fooled: Although pixel-art is used as texture, it still is a modern 3D-engine with a lot of effects in lighting, particles, water, god-rays and many other stuff, that was simply impossible on past hardware and software. And the designers at Square combined it into something so unique, so awesome, the art-style alone makes Octopath Traveler an unforgettable game.

But that isn't it alone. The fighting system is very advanced too. With the break system and weaknesses it makes fights pretty tactical and you have to make good use of it for many bosses in the game. The game also incorporated modified elements of the Bravely Default series, with the ability to boost your attack if you had saved up the points for multiple rounds. Combined you could use it to hit foes hard after you had broken their defenses, before they could regain their stance.

Outside of battle you had many interactions with the big amount of NPCs, including character specific actions. As the name suggests you have eight different main characters with different stories that progress, as they travel together through Orsterra. And it would be an error not to mention the soundtrack, this soundtrack is awesome and I often listen to it while working.

This game is a unique and awesome experience and I am sure it will be remembered as one of the defining games of the Switch. I would really like to see remakes of the early Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games in this style. Please Square, hear me out, this is a great idea. Anyways, I think everyone with a Switch and a love for RPGs should give this game a try. This game is also released on PC and Stadia.

Unguessed after four hints

One of the most replayable games ever. One of the best games ever too, to be fair. It can't be considered anything else when it pretty much single-handedly popularized a new genre. People give Castlevania credit, but I mean, it's only credited in the genre's name for being the only other notable series to adopt this style of gameplay before indies picked it up a long time after. The Metroidvania was invented by Metroid, technically the first one, but Super Metroid is where everyone realized how awesome a game like this could be.

The game does such a good job of teaching the player how to traverse its world, in a way where the player doesn't even realize they're being guided - and while this often has people finding out the game is very linear in subsequent playthroughs, it's the exact opposite here. The more you understand the world and its mechanics, the more you begin to realize just about everything is within reach, nothing is impossible. The skill ceiling is insanely high, and the game allows for so much to be done with it, that speedrunners even created a category called "Reverse Boss Order". Self-explanatory, really, and it's crazy that something like that can exist, and that the game continues to function exactly as intended no matter how much you try to break it.

All that makes the game crazy fun to play through over and over again, but on top of that, Super Metroid also shines because of its atmosphere - this is something previous games in the series were already good at, but it got taken to the next level. Everything in the game feels so thoroughly looked at, every detail is so well thought out, the whole experience is filled with awesome surprises. Like how when you first descend into Zebes, there's this storm going on, and the atmosphere is really somber, a feeling that only gets stronger when you start descending into the remains of the first game's final boss chamber. Then, as you acquire the first few items, some lights turn on, some cameras turn on, and suddenly when you go back up there are space pirates attacking you from every corner. And then, later on in the game, when you return to the surface of Zebes after acquiring lots of upgrades, the somber atmosphere is replaced by a heroic tune that's there to signify how you've conquered that place, how it's no longer something you, the player, are afraid of. These kinds of things happen everywhere in the game, there's so much foreshadowing, some of which pays off in unexpected ways, some of which go just as you expect them to, and some of which never lead up to anything at all. The whole game is full of surprises, and they're all so memorable. The game is so memorable, really.

Top 50 >>

Damn,  as I was reading your reply to my last guess I realized it was Super Metroid.  Ah well....

8. Parasite Eve?

And this is where I realize this hint's unwanted potential of giving me spoilers for games I haven't played.

Well, it's not a huge spoiler since you basically meet that particular character at the very start of the game right before she transforms into the game's namesake. Honestly, my guess was quite far-fetched as the actress at the start is just the first thing you meet with a connection to Eve. So don't worry, there's a lot more to discover in Parasite Eve still.
