No. Neither Nintendo nor MS have had a colossal fuck up to give Sony the chance to take an opportunity to do a "$299" moment like at E3 1995 or "Here is how you play used games on PS4" moment. PS5 no doubt well well but unless MS and Nintendo fuck up as badly as Wii U or TV TV TV TV SPORTS! level anytime soon. No. Sony sold best when others around them fucked up and Sony seized a grand opportunity.

MS already did that with the Halo reveal.

No. Halo while not a great showing was far from a colossal disaster. So they got a new Wallguy meme. Big whoop. Doesn't mean much.

That’s a little dramatic. This ain’t 2013 fuck ups, not by a long shot. I wouldn’t call the reveal a deal breaker considering the gameplay, art style, music, and story were largely praised. Think the loudest and most hateful reactions were from people that don’t plan to play anyway.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

It will sell well but no way does it sell better than Switch.

Studio acquiring spree means more games, more variety, more AAA, and best part: no more game droughts Xbox typically has every gen.

Seeing the top selling Steam games (Grounded, Sea of Thieves, Halo MCC, Flight Sim should tell us that MS is finally getting their footing with gamers. Their games are resonating with people.

One edge they really have over a PS: their games actually have multiplayer. There is exceptions but for the most part this is true. Games that involve friends playing together can appeal and outlast “one and done” games the competition is now known for.

I wouldn't be so quick to rave about that. They acquired a few B-level studios with one or two titles to their name. After what they did with Rare there's no guarantee it will result in anything positive.

PC players go for different types of games. And if you're going to include that pass, does that mean PC gets lumped in with their marketshare total?

May or may not be a big deal. SP games still sell extremely well. MP is only a benefit when it fits the game. When it's not tacked on as an afterthought.

For a GP or GAAS model MP can help a lot on keeping players subscribed and needing less releases.

We shall see. It's hard to argue with the success of games like FN or Rocket, yet 'less releases' is exactly what doomed their current gen run. Someone like me starts a new game every week or two so variety is very important. The MP stuff I'll sprinkle in an hour here and there.

Certainly lack of games impacted current gen for MS, but having GP filled with games that every month receives a new chapter, some heavy hitter MP games can make the platform always busy.

I thought these opinions were obsolete at this point. Sea of Thieves is having its best year in 2020 for a game that released in 2018. It is by far their most successful game they ever made. And it’s successful because it has an addicting multiplayer loop that is multiplied when you play with friends. All Xbox studios have creative freedom.

“does that mean PC gets lumped in with their marketshare total?”

Well I mean if they making Xbox accounts on their PC and buying their games....Here’s where ones corporate loyalty comes into play. I imagine a PS fan would stick to tradition and count only consoles to disqualify MS efforts in other spaces. I would count Xbox accounts, no matter where they come from.

To me both Xbox and PC share a MS OS, we practically cousins :)

I'm not sure what the sales for sea of thieves is, but it had over 10 million users last year. Not to mention this is probably sea of thieves best year by far. With that being said, sea of theives is probably rare's most popular game that they ever created.

Not sure about Donkey Kong but Goldeneye sold about 8 million? God these ancient sales stats are hard to come by. Pretty sure there was a tweet that confirmed this. No way Donkey Kong Country had over 15 million players.

Having 10M people played the game hardly configures as Rare`s most successful IP. Let`s see if in 30 years the game will be remembered as DKC is still remembered, or as GoldenEye is still legendary, etc. I would say it is more likely it will be forgeted in a much shorter time. Also DKC, GoldenEye and other Rare classic games were the best when they launched, high critical acclaim, marvelous technical achievements, etc. That can`t be said to Sea of Thieves not even today and much less on its launch.

SNES sold about 60M HW, at a time a lot of people used to go to friends house to play, you can bet it had a lot more people that played DKC than the sales numbers show, even if through emulators. And Sea of Thieves sales probably didn`t cross 5M, most of the players came from GP.

You are probably using a very odd metric to call SoT more sucessful than DKC and other classic Rare games.
