As usual, I'm about to land myself on the unpopular side: I liked Microsoft's event a lot better.
Don't get me wrong, the Series X will lose. I can see that clearly at this point. There's no question in my mind after seeing both the PS5 and Xbox events that PlayStation 5 has the overall better line-up of offerings so far by most people's standards. I'm just not most people. (Obviously.) It's down to the particular games that have been announced for both systems. While I can see many titles now for each that I want, and to which end I will eventually get both a Series X and a PlayStation 5, the Series X's short-term line-up was already more appealing to me to start with and this new Microsoft event assured me that there are many, many more games I'll want to look forward to as well. The question here is that of which system to get this year and which one to instead get maybe next year. Right now, I'm strongly leaning toward prioritizing the Series X.
Let's just start with the indie line-up. People I think know that I often like indies better than more mainstream games and this showcase overall was no exception to that rule. I want like 75% of the games that were announced in that trailer, seriously! Specifically:
Lake
The Big Con
The Artful Escape
Sable
Song of Iron
Exo One
Last Stop
(Above list ordered by degree of personal interest.)
And here were some of the AAA titles showcased that interested me:
As Dusk Falls
Everwild
State of Decay 3
Senua's Saga: Hellblade II
Psychonauts 2
The Medium
(I'm interested in all of those games just about equally. )
A couple other Series X games I definitely want that were revealed earlier this year include Call of the Sea, which is slated for release this year alongside The Medium, and Bright Memory Infinite, which is generally expected to launch early next year.
For the PlayStation 5, I'm looking forward to quite a few games, including, in order of personal interest...
Stray
Solar Ash
Goodbye Volcano High
Where the Heart Is
Ghostwire: Tokyo
Jett: The Far Shore
Kena: Bridge of Spirits
Oddworld: Soulstorm
Destruction AllStars
Deathloop
Returnal
Horizon Forbidden West
HOWEVER, there's a pretty big overall difference in DEGREES of personal interest between these lists. Only the top five games I just listed for the PS5 are must-owns to me. Everything else falls below all of the games I've mentioned interest in for the Series X so far. Also, only one of those five games is slated for release this year and no others will likely come out within the next year's time for that matter. Cumulatively, this makes the Series X of much greater interest to me right now than the PlayStation 5. The PS5 line-up honestly just has a more straightforward, commercial feel to it overall. The Series X line-up looks more creative and I'm very much looking for legitimately new experiences in this medium right now. (And yes, I want to play as womanz just in general because I am one, sorry. Selfish, I know.)
I will agree with those who have criticized Microsoft's events for their comparative lack of actual game play footage though. The show they put on, in that way, was weaker in a technical sense. But this is about the games more than anything else for me. It's not often that I lean toward Microsoft's systems. I think people here know by now that I've not been the biggest Xbox fan just in general. But here's the divide I see right now, or at least the one that matters to me anyway: I can see more games destined for blockbuster status slated for the PlayStation 5, but many games that I think are more soulful for the Series X. I'm more drawn to the outsider in that equation, personally.
For the Switch, I'm really interested in an indie management game about dying called Spiritfarer that's slated for release later this year. Unfortunately though, aside from DLC content (like the recently announced DLC for Cadence of Hyrule), there's not really much else on the docket for the Switch I'm aware of that I'm also interested in. That's just about it really as of this moment.
