Forums - PC Discussion - Will 'Console Killer' PC's be dead for next gen?

(Random thought) Considering this thread, which Console do you think will be cheaper?

Playstation 5 16 32.65%

Xbox Series X 10 20.41%

Same Launch Price 23 46.94%

Total:49

I still dont see it any sooner than late 2022. And by then the consoles will probably be reduced in price as well. So still wont ever be close. we are looking at at least double the price to match a console.

If you care about hardware why even bother with consoles anyways. Also the question of hardware return is going to be more important this gen.

Many AA devs are having difficulty managing PS4 hardware or actually utilizing its by now little power. Take Atlus, NIS and Temco Koei for example even late in the life cycle of the PS4 they can barely make games that look much better than the average Switch game on PS4.

Next gen even more AA devs will not be able to really use much of the 20 TF monsters that you can build in 2021/2022 for € 600,-. It will simply be to expensive to really make use of all the power that high end pc's have for AA devs. Which sell like 1-2 million units or less.

As for AAA games those will definitely look much better on pc's with 20 TF which you can build for € 600 in 2021 or 2022. Although even pc will hit a point of diminishing return at one point. How much better will games look on the lets say 80 TF pc's that can be build in 2030 compared to the 10 or 30 TFLOP console counter parts assuming their is a midgen upgrade.

Specs wise the PC is much much better, but what does it give in return. The PS4 pro is much more powerful than PS4 vanilla (GPU at least) , but how often does it really show that.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Sure, but that has always be the case, hasn't it? So nothing has changed.

It's always been the case, but never been this dramatic before. (It's mainly cause PCI GEN 4 SSD and motherboard that runs them is like 60% the potential cost of a PS5. Not even including the CPU/GPU.

When the PS2 launched in the US for $299, gaming PCs were in the price area of $1500 - $4500... so 5x - 15x of the console price:

After 2 years a $2000 PC already got problems to run the newest PC games, even with reduced settings.

Today we are talking about ~3x the price of a new console for a PC which can play the newest games for many years.

Not really applicable. Completely different architectures and everything isn't as standardised and easy as things are now.

Plus these consoles use the exact same x86 architecture under the hood as PC's. That wasn't the case and has only been the case since 2013.

Nvidia just put PS5 and XSX in their place today lol.

The first Xbox had x86 architecture under the hood as PCs. It launched one year after the PS2 for $299, gaming PCs still 5x - 10x of the console price.

Again still with my second point, PC gaming just wasn't the way it is now.

I will rephrase though:

Modern consoles haven't been this far ahead price/performance ratio for several generations.
