It's always been the case, but never been this dramatic before. (It's mainly cause PCI GEN 4 SSD and motherboard that runs them is like 60% the potential cost of a PS5. Not even including the CPU/GPU. 

When the PS2 launched in the US for $299, gaming PCs were in the price area of $1500 - $4500... so 5x - 15x of the console price:

After 2 years a $2000 PC already got problems to run the newest PC games, even with reduced settings.

Today we are talking about ~3x the price of a new console for a PC which can play the newest games for many years.
