Forums - PC Discussion - GEARS Tactics is very good

Gears Tactics released on the 28/4/20 Tuesday and it seems its not a low budgeted spin off but a full fledged AAA title based around the X-Com genre and is a pre-qual to Gears of War (1).

The way Gears slides into this genre is rather flawless, it makes you wonder why they didn't opt to make a Gears Tactics game a lot earlier. Gears is well known for its cover base shooting elements and making a turn based tactics game only brings out how well the Gears series pulls it off as it works extremely well in this genre too.

The game is quite long as its campaign will possibly take you around 25 hours on easy settings however that could change to 30+ hours on harder modes. It offers its brutality and gore from the mainline series and the sound and music design is what you will expect from a Gears game and to top it off, the visuals and cutscenes are what you would expect from a current gen gears game, their were no cut corners with this game, money was spent to make this game as good and serious as its mainline counterparts.

Gears Tactics sits on a healthy score of 81 (Healthy meaning review sites that actually matter) The game is also selling quite well and is Steam's best selling game on its release so far. Considering this game isn't available in all regions yet and is also on GamePass, this seems to be quite a good achievement and a "Slam Dunk" for both X-Com and Gears of War gamers.

Gears Tactics is currently only available on Windows 10 Store and Steam as well as GamePass for PC, however there is a console release in the works with a TBA release date. This game is a must for those into Tactical Turn base games and Gears of War fans. Gamingbolt couldn't say it any better..

"People are hungry for some of that tactical Gears."

Nice! I will check this out eventually when I get some time. I love some good Xcom spinoffs, Mario X Rabbids was awesome and Gears Tactics looks to be right up my alley. I'm glad that they managed to drive away from the shooter mechanics yet still deliver a AAA product.

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

I see some good reviews for it on steam store page then some negative (of course). The negatives worry me a little because they say that some mission are just terrible (I believe the escort missions and only allow you to pick maybe one person while others are predetermined), had some people pissed about enemy spawning (enemies would spawn right next to them and kill their squad member in same turn), and a few other little things like items/gear doesn't drop that often (some were saying you have to do 4+ missions before getting anything of value for your squad).

So I will keep my eye on this game because turn based strategy fan but I'm not sure if I can drop 60 on it. I'm sure they will address some of these issues with patch later. Otherwise for their first attempt at turning Gears into a XCOM turn based game seems like they did a decent job overall. Also, one reviewer said he and his wife have problems with game crashing and they are using different Nvidia cards. So there might be an issue with Nvidia cards and this game (I have a 1060 6GB myself).

Wanted to make a thread but I haven't played it yet. Free time being the biggest factor. Glad to know it's good, though.

I almost fell into that trap where I decide after clearing all enemies on screen to explore the map, spreading all my units out only to find out I triggered more of the mission where the Locust invaded again.. I managed to survive unscathed but it shocked me. Not all the missions are going to be 10/10 however they are quite good all round. For me, I am no fan of time limits in games and I just accept them now rather then complain about them later so to with escort missions, I just accept them as variety rather than a bad design choice.

I run a GTX1080 and I haven't had the game crash once.. yet so I cannot say if that's an issue or if some people are just extremely unlucky.

What on earth does this have to do with anything? Did you make the same observation when God of War released on his birthday 2 years ago?

Yea that crashing might just be local issue with that one user and his wife's PC because I don't think any other reviews mentioned that.  Did see someone else complain about time limit mission because they give you like 15 mins when starting game not facing elite units which isn't much  of issue but then they give you same time limit against elite enemies later in game. He said that was a semi issue due to scale in difficulty or whatever while still keeping same time limit.

I might not even wait for sale on this game.  I might just buy full price even though I have XCOM2 on backlog.  I'll do it just to support the genre and I don't mind rewarding developers that make actual good games.  Got some chores to do outside but I'll report back with at least hour or two playtime tonight.

Hitler's birthday is April 20th.  Steam page says April 28th.  Did it release on Windows store a week early?  Not that any of this matters just wondering if released earlier on Windows store.
