Halo: Combated Evolved Anniversary (Replay) (PC) [Finished May 17th, 2020] - Rating: 9.2 - Amazing:

I enjoyed this even more than I was expecting. Love the original Halo games, but always remembered the original feeling a bit outdated compared to the rest of the series. In some aspects it's still true, but it just clicked even more on what is now my third playthrough of the full game (including the original Xbox version). Most of the levels I remember being apathetic towards were now big positives, and I now appreciated more than ever the directing of the game. How many wow moments there are just going into a new environment, staring at the art design and the vistas. The more colorful nature of this still makes it a more visually appealing game most of the time then, say, the original version of Halo 2, ironically enough. The gameplay is chaos on Heroic and I love it. The backtracking mission is still pretty bad, and another level is just mediocre. But overall it has a lot of the highest highs in the franchise.

Okami HD (NS) - Rating: 6.5 - Good:

Great story and a lot of interesting mechanics held back by execution and some very average elements. The art design is nice, music is good though I don't think I'd go out of my way to listen to most songs, and the controls are generally spot-on, if not anything amazing. What is so frustrating is the controls of the brush. Interacting with objects that are in a 3d space with a canvas which can only convey 2D lines is annoying, at times even infuriating. Having to constantly readjust the camera to fix mistranslations of intentions just sucks. Like why. Why. The dungeon design in this game is so bland for every dungeon except the final ones at the end of each part - and even then the closing dungeon of Part 1 (the Orochi one) is not too special apart from the boss fight. The camera is odd ... it isn't really intrusive and normally doesn't get in the way ... but it still feels ... off. Even in normal gameplay you are always having to readjust to get a better view. The combat has a decent amount of depth ... after you get past the first 15 hours. And honestly the introduction of depth mostly just makes enemies a nuisance rather than a trial. The sub weapon system is neat, it has more depth than something like Nier Automata, but it needed more variety. Unlocking rewards with XP, or rewards with demon fangs was ultimately pointless because ... the game is fucking easy. Biggest problem of all was that this game actually made me question at times if I like the traditional 3D Zelda formula at all. Not only were the dungeons generally weak as previously described, but the items are almost entirely useless. You get so many items and you don't need them because the game is easy. You get upgrades, but a lot of the upgrades are extensions of things you already have. Which is common in 3D Zelda games too, but here it's worse because it lacks the physicality of power ups that variants have in Zelda games. Everything is a self fulfilling prophecy of monotonous repetition. You do things to further things and instead of feeling natural it just feels like padding. It honestly feels like a parody of the kind of criticisms people were having of Zelda before Breath of the Wild. Talk for minutes on end just to do a basic bitch puzzle. Talk for minutes on end to, get this, get another joke about how much Issun loves pussy. Thanks Issun, it was actually surprisingly funny for a long enough time, but even that enjoyment had to come to an end when 20 hours in it was still the main characteristic of every humanoid female character. Have Issun tell the player anytime they do something even remotely wrong as if the player are dumb babies. SHUT UP ABOUT THE CRACK MINI GAME ISSUN. JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP. You're still cool and I like you a lot. Waka doesn't even get justice in the last two parts of the game. He's just shoehorned in as important in the end. And that final boss is such a disappointment. There is probably some sort of metaphor or symbolism about false notions of power against a true god, but I don't care. Fuck that fish bruh. I didn't die once in this game, and i'm trash at games, that's when you know something is wrong with your game. I could probably think of more things to rant about, but that's it for now. Good game, I do like it. But I'd never touch it again.

Overall, too long for what it's trying to accomplish.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition (NS) [Finished June 17th, 2020] - Rating 9.1 - Amazing:

This is skybox porn at it's near finest. This is environmental porn for people who like to remember that video games can actually take you to places that don't look like your backyard. And perhaps most fascinating at all this is a JRPG that has it's most amazing moments happen at the beginning, middle, and end - which makes for fantastic story beats and overall pacing. If playing dress up with your characters, good voice acting, fantastic soundtracks (albeit with some questionable remixing), and an enthralling if messy storyline weren't convincing enough - then there's a pretty fun combat system here too. Even if ... the leveling system is just, ass, and too self-important.

Hollow Knight (NS) [Finished July 5th, 2020] - Rating 8.8 - Great:

Fantastic art direction, good boss design, and an engaging map system make Hollow Knight a great treat. This is a game where I found myself actually exploring every inch of the map whenever I was stuck instead of resorting to a guide like some coward normie, and guess what, it actually solved the problem 99% of the time. Things can get a bit messier when you are given three objectives on the map at once, but still. The badge system and map system really do a lot to help the game shine. Badges can change how you play quite a lot, and they're a great reward for saving caterpillars. If I had a complaint or two, it would probably be that despite the excellent production of the OST, it isn't very memorable save for a few tracks, which isn't really good for a game where you'll constantly be backtracking. I also think the enemy design felt a little basic, like there wasn't actually much variants in common enemies. Even a lot of the bosses sort of resort to the same concepts. However, given the length of the game, this was bound to happen to some extent, but I'd love if this stuff was addressed in Silksong.

Beaten:

1. Iconoclasts (Switch) - This game is kind of billed as a metroidvania, even though it only barely meets that requirement. Still, a great, mostly linear, action platformer with a killer story. We're talking RPG quality story. Almost straight out of a mid to late 90s JRPG, with its deeply political and religious overtones.

2. Phantasy Star (Switch) - Great old school JRPG.  I never had Sega systems growing up, so I never really got into these.  But I have the other 3 games on Steam, so I'll start working my way through the others soon.

3. Shenmue I (PC) - Had a great time with this one. I know it's pretty archaic to you new schoolers, but it was a lot of fun.  Felt like this cheesy kung fu movie with terrible voice acting.  It was glorious. Looking forward to the second one.

4. Nioh (PC) - Main game is completed.  I think I'll be spending quite a bit more time working on Way of the Strong (and above) and the DLC stuff.

5. Blaster Master Zero 2 (Switch) - Can't wait for the inevitable third game!

6. Final Fantasy 7 Remake (PS4) - Looking forward to the next one!

7. Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (PC) - Hard but satisfying!  So many red herrings in this game.

8: Uru: To D'ni (PC) - More of a history lesson with less challenging puzzles than the main game.

In Progress:

1. Blasphemous (PC)

2. Uru: Path of the Shell (PC)

Currently working on:

  • Far Cry 5 DLCs (2 out of 3 left)
  • Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville (EA Access)

  • Nier: Automata (PS4) (9.5/10) One of the best stories I've ever experienced in video games with wonderfully written characters, combined with a huge amount of gameplay variety and a fun and fast-paced combat system, which had been the weak point in Yoko Taro's earlier works. Easily going to make my top 50 games of all time list this year.
  • GRIS (PC) (8/10) An absolutely gorgeous 2D platformer, easily one of the best looking games I've ever played, with a beautiful soundtrack layered on top of it all. The actual gameplay is quite simple, but solid, and there are some very satisfying moments of platforming in the game, even if none of it is all that challenging. It is a very short game, but every moment I spent with GRIS was thoroughly enjoyable.
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of War (PS4) (8/10) A solid open world game made better by the nemesis system that did the same for Shadow of Mordor. The gameplay is fun, the world has a lot of nice variety to it, and although the story is kinda silly in the context of the books, but as a kind of non-canon side thing it's fine enough. Gets a bit grindy at the end, which soured me a little towards it, but it wasn't too bad. If the epilogue had been like in the original release before the balance changes and the removal of lootboxes I probably would have not been nearly as kind towards the game, but as it stands now I do recommend Shadow of War.
  • Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (PS4) (8.5/10) A charming and gorgeous and a sequel to one of my favourite games from the previous console generation. I'm not sure if I would rank it higher than the first game, though. The gameplay is vastly improved compared to the first one, with the battle system, side quests and the other side stuff available for you to do just being much more interesting and varied in comparison. The story and character are also very good, but I might still prefer the first game's cast and story to this one. Still a very good game, and well worth the time I put into it.
  • The Banner Saga 2 (PC) (8/10) The Banner Saga-games (at least the first two) aren't necessarily groundbreaking tactical RPGs in any way, at least as far as gameplay is concerned. Every element of the gameplay can be found in other games in one form or another, but these are still very well put together games with a battle system that has plenty of tactical depth to it. The nordic mythology-inspired story is very well written and the characters are interesting as well. Still, perhaps the most impressive aspect of these games is the visual style. The backgrounds and characters look absolutely gorgeous, and the animated sequences always look great as well, though I wish there were more of them. Overall, Banner Saga 2 is a good game that I enjoyed playing through, just one that doesn't really bring anything new to the genre.
  • A Short Hike (PC) (7.5/10) A charming little game that I finished on a single sitting. It's unlikely that I'll ever go back to the game, but the short story it tells is quite lovely, and the relaxing, low-stakes gameplay is perfect for unwinding in-between other more demanding games. If you're looking for a game to just take your mind off things and just relax for a few hours, this is a very good option for that.
  • Nioh (PS4) (8/10) A very good Dark Souls-inspired games, that doesn't quite reach the same heights as FromSoftware's titles. I enjoyed the gameplay for the most part, the story was fine, if somewhat disjointed, and William is a good main character. The locations aren't as interesting as those found in Dark Souls for example, and the world as a whole also feels like a collection of disconnected places that don't feel like part of the same world very often. Still, despite my issues, I very much enjoyed the game overall, but unlike Dark Souls or Bloodborne I'll likely never replay it.
  • Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince (PS4) (8.5/10) Played through the game in co-op, and as of right now it might be my favourite in the entire series. I'll have to go through it alone at some point to come to a conclusion, but even with the co-op playthrough Trine 4 is a very good game. The puzzles are better and more varied than in previous games, the gameplay much more fluid and intuitive, and while the story has never really been that important in the series outside of setting up a fairytale-like tone, it's fun and charming as well. Just an overall enjoyable game to play, and a great co-op title as well.
  • My Time At Portia (PC) (8.5/10) This was a really fun and relaxing game, that in a lot of ways reminds me of Harvest Moon, except instead of building a farm you do so with a crafting workshop. I put almost 130 hours into this game, and I finished the main storyline and most of the sidequests in that time, and I enjoyed pretty much all of it. There's just so much stuff you can do here, besides crafting new machines and items there's farming, relationship building, dungeons to explore, ruins where you can mine for ore and relics, and so much more.
  • Deponia (PC) (7.5/10) Every once in a while I get in the mood to play some traditional point-and-click adventure games, and I'd had Deponia (and two sequels to it) on my Steam library for ages, so this was a good time to get around to playing it. Visually it's a very good looking game, and the setting is interesting and unique. The story and characters were pretty good too, though it does show that this was essentially just the first chapter in the story, so a lot of stuff was left unfinished. The main character can be somewhat annoying at times, especially early on in the game, but that also gives him some clear room for growth and development, which is nice. I guess the best thing I can say is that after finishing Deponia I'm still looking forward to playing the rest of the series.
  • Wild Arms 3 (PS4) (8/10) It had been a while since I'd played a proper old-school JRPG that I hadn't previously experienced, and since I had bought Wild Arms 3 a while back on a sale I thought I'd give it a shot. Overall, I really enjoyed it. The music is great, I really like the world these games take place in, the characters are well written and interesting, and the gameplay has enough unique elements to separate it from the pack. The story is fairly standard JRPG fare, but the main issue I had with the game is the fact that it just doesn't really explain a lot of its mechanics to the player very well. Several times over the course of the game I had to go and find out what certain things actually meant from guides or forum posts, because I couldn't find the information within the game itself. Still, this is a good game well worth playing though, especially if you're a fan of the genre.
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4) (9/10) I genuinely loved this game, and it could very well end up as my GotY at the end of the year. I thought the battle system is excellent, with a genuinely well designed take on the classic ATB system at its core, the expanded story and characters were great, and visually this is one of the best looking games of the year. I'm also very curious to see where they take this story going forward considering how the game ended. The sidequests were the one aspect I would have liked to have been more interesting, but at least the gameplay made them enjoyable enough. A great game, without question. I won't compare it to the original until the whole story has been told, but this is definitely a good way to get things started with the remake.

Currently Playing:

  • The Witcher (PC) Slowly making progress on-and-off. About halfway through at the moment I think, maybe a little more.
  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (PS3)

Just Finished: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)

This is only the third Zelda game I have beaten after Twilight Princess and Four Swords Adventure. Still I recognize it is a dramatic departure from the traditional Zelda formula. Visually the game is gorgeous with a fantastic art style and impressive attention to detail. I adore how the game included sci-fi elements and futuristic tech in the game while still keeping the classic fairy tale feel. The game world feels large and alive even though it is sparsely populated. The level design is so well thought-out, its like it was designed by a bunch of geniuses. I'm torn about how open the game is. On the one hand the ability to complete most of the game and the shrines in any order you like is welcome. On the other hand though if you venture somewhere the game does not want you to go it will just have an enemy there that can kill you in one hit, which seems cheap. The four main dungeons are mostly good. The quality of the 120 shrines are hit and miss though. They feel like mini dungeons. I am glad the game FINALLY include voice acting for the dialogue, even if it is only for certain scenes. The story is not that special, just another riff on the save the princess premise. Gannon as a disembodied force of dark energy also makes for a poor villain with no charisma or any depth. I did not really enjoy the combat either. It was annoying having equipment break so often and it seemed arbitrary which enemies could kill you with one hit or not. The boss battles are epic, especially with the grand sense of scale. I detect some inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus. Some parts of the game work surprisingly well in handheld mode even though I mostly played the game docked. I do not think I can overstate how frustrating I found certain segments and game mechanics. Sometimes I felt downright miserable playing through this. There is so much to see and do in this game I doubt I'll ever see it all but playing through all the major story quest is sufficient for now. Also the lack of post game content is rather ridiculous. After destroying Ganon the game only allows you to load from right before the fight. You are free to leave and go back and explore the world but it seems like a missed opportunity to see how the game world changes once Ganon has been defeated. Is the Breath of the Wild an excellent game and my favorite Zelda of the ones I have tried? For sure. The greatest game ever made? I respectfully disagree.

9/10
