Just Finished: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
This is only the third Zelda game I have beaten after Twilight Princess and Four Swords Adventure. Still I recognize it is a dramatic departure from the traditional Zelda formula. Visually the game is gorgeous with a fantastic art style and impressive attention to detail. I adore how the game included sci-fi elements and futuristic tech in the game while still keeping the classic fairy tale feel. The game world feels large and alive even though it is sparsely populated. The level design is so well thought-out, its like it was designed by a bunch of geniuses. I'm torn about how open the game is. On the one hand the ability to complete most of the game and the shrines in any order you like is welcome. On the other hand though if you venture somewhere the game does not want you to go it will just have an enemy there that can kill you in one hit, which seems cheap. The four main dungeons are mostly good. The quality of the 120 shrines are hit and miss though. They feel like mini dungeons. I am glad the game FINALLY include voice acting for the dialogue, even if it is only for certain scenes. The story is not that special, just another riff on the save the princess premise. Gannon as a disembodied force of dark energy also makes for a poor villain with no charisma or any depth. I did not really enjoy the combat either. It was annoying having equipment break so often and it seemed arbitrary which enemies could kill you with one hit or not. The boss battles are epic, especially with the grand sense of scale. I detect some inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus. Some parts of the game work surprisingly well in handheld mode even though I mostly played the game docked. I do not think I can overstate how frustrating I found certain segments and game mechanics. Sometimes I felt downright miserable playing through this. There is so much to see and do in this game I doubt I'll ever see it all but playing through all the major story quest is sufficient for now. Also the lack of post game content is rather ridiculous. After destroying Ganon the game only allows you to load from right before the fight. You are free to leave and go back and explore the world but it seems like a missed opportunity to see how the game world changes once Ganon has been defeated. Is the Breath of the Wild an excellent game and my favorite Zelda of the ones I have tried? For sure. The greatest game ever made? I respectfully disagree.
