I actually missed on Jet Set Radio on the DC because I didn't like the art style. Was angry when Zelda went Celda on WW (though I bought that game at launch and actually enjoyed it) have eased up on this stance since. Now if I am dubious about the art style, I look at review scores and if the game gets a good score I usually buy.

Sometimes. The "video" part of "video game" is an important factor, and if the game is an eyesore I probably will skip on it.

Also, 3D remakes of old 2D sprite-based games are something I'll skip on entirely. Good quality sprites to me will always look better than most 3D models attempting to replicate the design of the original.

I skipped the whole new generation of Monkey Island / Sam and Max games because of the ugly 3D style.

I've also skipped Ni No Kuni 2 when Ghibli was no longer involved. The hand drawn scenes were the best.

I was in the "Celda" camp until I played it. Now my fave Zelda game ever.

I hated the look of Darksiders. Then I played it and loved it.

I wasn't so sure about the lanky design of Bayonetta. Now my fave stylish action game series.

Games with actual art style I try to give a chance. It doesn't always work out for me. I loved the look of Souls and Bloodborne. Amazing art. Just not very keen on the gameplay. Realism is a little different. Of course, I play games that go for 100% realism like and not stylized realism (Yakuza or DMC5 as examples of stylized realism) but 100% realism I am just not a fan of most the time. It's just so fucking boring. I can look out a window. Lisa Ann's boobs are more real to me than games like R* or Naughty Dog total realism attempts. Just not a fan.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Not really unless it's something extremely ugly like Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning and even then i liked that game for what it is.

Yeah, I passed on World of Final Fantasy because of this. I couldn't get over how the characters had huge over-sized heads. what was even weirder was that they had characters in the game with more realistic proportions.

In general I'm pretty forgiving, but anime and chibi are easy ways to turn me off a game very quickly.

No, that's stupid. If a game is really good I will play it regardless of the art style. I think that's the general consensus of most gamers. For example, do people play Minecraft because it has a great presentation?

More likely, I might pass on a game if its technically a mess. For example, I've stopped playing some games because the performance or presentation (bad pop in, blurry, etc) was abysmal. Some that come to mind are Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 and Shadow of Mordor on 360. Both games having "shadow" in the title is a coincidence.

Battletoads for Xbox One.

That crossed my mind as well.

However, its the gameplay that will determine whether I like it.

My experience has been that if the art style really bugs me, its not worth pushing on regardless as the annoyance just mounts. Almost every time I've pushed on and tried to ignore it, I've ended up wishing I bailed earlier.

In fact, not just in terms of art style but games in general, I've found that I just can't be bothered anymore investing my time, money, and energy into something if it's not my cup of tea. A lot of games I bought on, say, Wii U, I wouldn't buy if they'd come out today.

I think if the art style bugs you and you can't look past it, then odds are you just don't enjoy the gameplay.

I mean has anybody ever said, "This game is so fucking fun and the story is engaging! BUT I gave up because I didn't like the art style."

People appear to be talking about experiences of not playing a game partly because of the presentation. Nobody is saying they stopped playing a fun game because of the presentation.
