Forums - Nintendo - Nikkei rumor: Nintendo Switch Mini Launches In Mid 2019, New Online Services Aimed At Core Gamers

This service for enthusiasts will be a paid streaming service for SNES, N64, GB, GBA games. I've said this a few times: Nintendo is not willing to give us a Virtual Console unless they can monetise the hell out of it. A streaming service would be a gold mine for them and they could charge a lot of money annually. Look at Sony's profits with PSN. This is what Nintendo is aiming at and the NES online service is only the playground.

A Switch Mini makes sense, as long as it's a fully fledged console and not handheld-only. It just needs a dock and be compatible with Joy-Cons obviously.

It seems as though that was a mistranslation about the new service, apparently its actually they are adding new features to the current service.

Oh boy, should've seen that! But hey, maybe those new features are more systems you can stream.

There are really people who think a mini switch is a horrible idea? People won’t get confused when a Switch is called “Switch Mini” or “Switch Lite”.

A Switch-less Switch still sounds like a terrible idea

If Nintendo came out with a Switch Lite that had built-in controls rather than slots for Joycons, would you consider that Switch-less even if it could connect to a dock and thus switch between handheld and docked mode?

How do you control it docked?

That's not convoluted at all. I'm sure the clueless parents of gaming children will totally be pleased by that.

Convoluted? You're already making the assumption that these "clueless" parents are going to take the extra effort of buying unnecessary controllers in the first place. The entire point of a handheld-focused Switch is that it has built-in controls and doesn't need Joy-Cons to function. What you've presented is a complete non-issue.

I mean... you can sit here and pretend people aren't advocating that people WOULD be purchasing extra controllers to play it in docked mode. Here. I'll quote one.

With separately purchased controllers. The whole idea here is an SKU for households that already have one Switch or people who aren't interested in TV usage. As such an optional upgrade path with separate dock and controller purchases would just be there to leave the option open for customers if they should later decide that they want TV usage with their console. But in practical terms the overwhelming usage would be a handheld Switch, i.e. a handheld-first SKU that is still a proper Switch if desired.

Switch Mini shouldn't be looked at as a replacement SKU, but rather an additional SKU with its own purpose.

Imagine how much a handheld-only option for the Switch would sell with a $200 price tag. But would it still be called Switch (name wouldn't make sense for the concept anymore)?

A year ago I would have agreed with all the ‘confusion’ posts, but Switch will be over 2 years old by the time something like this comes out, hardly anyone under 50 is going to be confused. I would give it a more distinctive name than Switch Mini personally, and some ads and the console boxes should be clear on the diffs, but I don’t think this is such a big deal anymore.
If it’s true!

Do you really think that my post supports the misguided point you are trying to make?

Obviously, yes. I'm not sure why you would be talking about purchasing joy cons and docks separately for a Switch Portable if you didn't think that a Switch Portable would support using joy cons and docks. Are you claiming a Switch Portable wouldn't support joy cons and docks? Care to tell me how "As such an optional upgrade path with separate dock and controller purchases would just be there to leave the option open for customers if they should later decide that they want TV usage with their console." doesn't mean this Switch Portable would support using joy cons and docks?

I am mentioning optional Joy-Con and dock purchases because I make a clear distinction between handheld-first and handheld-only. The latter wouldn't be a Switch anymore.

I also said that in practical terms the vast majority of customers wouldn't pursue the optional upgrade path, which is logical because I had already mentioned that the target demographic of such a Switch Mini SKU are people who already have one Switch in their household (that unit already serving the TV usage) or are people who are specifically looking for portability.

As far as I've understood your point, you are against this idea because of supposedly unknowing parents being prone to making the wrong purchase.

Well its' clear you never understood my point, because that's only one of several reasons I mentioned, and you've chosen to focus on just one.

So how can something be "optional" if the device actually physically not be used properly with the accessories in question? It's like saying an SD card is an an optional accessory on a PS Vita because companies actually do make adapters to make a micro SD card work with a hacked Vita. Just because there is a work around that involves purchasing additional accessories in order to use a product as intended doesn't make that accessory "optional".

The Switch Mini that I have described can be used properly without any accessories.

Ahh. Okay. Go ahead and describe how one would play Mario Party on the Switch Mini then.
