That's not convoluted at all. I'm sure the clueless parents of gaming children will totally be pleased by that.

Convoluted? You're already making the assumption that these "clueless" parents are going to take the extra effort of buying unnecessary controllers in the first place. The entire point of a handheld-focused Switch is that it has built-in controls and doesn't need Joy-Cons to function. What you've presented is a complete non-issue.

I mean... you can sit here and pretend people aren't advocating that people WOULD be purchasing extra controllers to play it in docked mode. Here. I'll quote one.

How do you control it docked?

With separately purchased controllers. The whole idea here is an SKU for households that already have one Switch or people who aren't interested in TV usage. As such an optional upgrade path with separate dock and controller purchases would just be there to leave the option open for customers if they should later decide that they want TV usage with their console. But in practical terms the overwhelming usage would be a handheld Switch, i.e. a handheld-first SKU that is still a proper Switch if desired.

Switch Mini shouldn't be looked at as a replacement SKU, but rather an additional SKU with its own purpose.
