Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Smash Ultimate doesn't feel very casual friendly

As the difficulty on the World of Light mode... I´ve heard that it´s a matter of combining the best spirits. Maybe for certain fights you need certain spirits to make things easier.

Its true, there's like 4 different types of spirits that can get and level up and some are stronger against a specific set of spirits(shield/sword,etc). I have a few to level 99 out of each category

I'm loving it. I was so confident on doing hard mode in WoL and I've been getting my ass kicked. It really takes me back to Mele's challenges and how satisfactory it was to complete them.

Also I never thought Smash was that casual. Sure it was accessible but it never was an easy sell like Mario Kart to the casuals.

I find them extremely easy in the World of Light. They are tough in the main screen when you get challenged.

I haven't even touched World of Light yet. I wanted to get the complete roster first. Just been having smash battles and going through classic.

Now that I think about it, World of Light requires you to unlock all the characters again aside from Kirby. And since the fighters you unlock in World of Light unlock in the base game, but not the other way around, there's actually very little incentive to not just go through WoL. :/

Well, I'm having a lot of fun just doing the classic mode. I love that they are all different for each character. World of Light will be when I want to learn about spirits and collect them :P

Smash Bros. was never casual friendly.

Or at least, it was never friendly to beginners.

You can't button-mash your way out of anything in the game. You get your teeth kicked in every single game if you play against oldtimers.

I'm new to Smash Bros and am an experienced gamer, not in hardcore territory though, I just play and enjoy games and am happy to invest time in them and try to get better.

That said, Smash Bros really could have done with a tutorial mode. I still don't have much of an idea as to what's actually going on. It's a strange and bonkers game, and I had a very rough knowledge of the game in advance. But as I said, I'm still baffled while playing, and if you didn't know about the knocking off the platform etc.., you'd be completely stuffed in my view.

At this point, I'm not really enjoying it, but I will persist and maybe do some research into what it's all about. However, you shouldn't have to do this in this day and age, so a bit of a fail from Nintendo in my view.

I wouldn't even begin to ask someone who had never played it before to join me for a game, they'd probably think I'd drugged their drink!

I haven’t watched the How to Play video in the movies submenu, but if it’s like the other entries, it should help you with the basics you need to understand how to play the game. I hope it’ll help you enjoy the game more.

Thanks Abbron627, I intend to watch them, but as I said, this shouldn't be necessary to enjoy a game in the modern era and might turn some people off (myself included). This sort of thing should be built in. I've played lots of games in my time, Street Fighter etc makes instant sense, but this game certainly doesn't (for casuals and newbies, would definitely be a turn off for them).

Even a very simple explanation of how to actually win, I honestly didn't have a clue to begin with, and still a bit sketchy.

I pretty much stink at Smash, so I've gotten my ass handed to me in WoL. But one thing that helped is the realization that I often don't HAVE to fight the Ace or Legendary spirits in my path right away. There's usually an alternative route with weaker spirits, sometimes even ones with abilities that counter the blockers. So I've been focusing on gunning for the characters through the path of least resistance, and that makes the game more fun for me at least. The challenges are there for when I feel like I'm ready, but so far I haven't run into a situation where I was completely walled from progression due to a spirit I just couldn't beat. There was always another way I could go that often lead to the same destination.

Also if all else fails, it seems like the difficulty can be adjusted at any time. Maybe bump it up for novice spirits and drop it down for ridiculous ones for a more consistent challenge?

Dammit, that Pauline-spirit challenge is annoying
