History with Nintendo or not, Joker is one of the coolest characters to ever exist, and Persona 5 is a landmark for rpgs. He deserves his spot imo.

Villager doesnt have a moveset and Ridley is too big ;)

I'll post what I posted on SmashBoards here:
Guys, I still haven't recovered from this.
I mean, ever since I heard the BOTW music and Rivers in the Desert being covered in 2017's Game Awards, I always just had these mental images of Link and Joker fighting to the death, proving who is ultimately the stronger protagonist from two of this gen's greatest games of all time, but the two would ultimately befriend each other.
Xenoblade and Persona 5 are probably my two favorite RPGs of all time, both featuring amazing stories, characters, gameplay, and music that truly made me appreciate gaming even more than I already did, and the fact both Shulk and Joker are in the same game and can engage in friendly sparring is just surreal and magical to me, that mere words can't even describe it.
I never thought Nintendo would put Joker in Smash, but if I had to guess, maybe it wasn't necessarily Joker specifically, and that any ATLUS character would have satisfied in terms of promotional reasons, and Sakurai took that opportunity to put his heart and soul into a character from a series he loves ever so much.
Ultimate was already an amazing game, and the return of cut veterans like Snake, Wolf, and Ice Climbers, as well as the debut of characters people wanted like Ridley, K Rool, and Simon was more than enough to make me get this game, but with Joker on the horizon, I don't even know what to say.
Nintendo, Sakurai, and ATLUS, thank you for gracing Earth with one of the most amazing games of all time, we do not deserve any of you.
"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

A little close minded on this? A lot of Ultimate's newcomers are half clones .... |
That’s why I didn’t include just Ultimate’s newcomers ;)
Take Ryu for example. He completely changed how Smash characters CAN be developed. Using command inputs in a Smash game is pretty insane when Smash Bros. uses two buttons instead of six in Street Fighter.
Heck I forgot to mention Robin. Utiilizing your weaponry carefully as your sword and magic can run out temporarily.
Then you got Bayonetta. Her combo ability reflects her gameplay from her games. Sure it was kinda ridiculous in Smash 4, but it felt like you were playing Bayonetta from her games.
These are just examples. All I’m saying is that we should not assume Sakurai is going to make one character based off another, especially when said character, Rex, doesn’t fight like the other, Shulk, in their respective games.

Hey man. It’s pretty awesome that you’re having your “dreams come true” moment.
I was ecstatic when I saw that Ryu was going to be DLC in Smash 4 as he was my own dream character (along with Chun Li, though I hope she’ll one day get her chance).

Nope. Remember Solid Snake and Cloud in Smash. |
MGS was on GC, Snake himself was meant to be in Melee plus MGS3 was on 3DS while the whole FF back log from VII up to XII is coming to Switch it's not farfetched tbh.

Well, Persona Q2 has Joker, this matches MGS on GC and 3DS. The Final Fantasies come now, years after cloud in Smash.

Didn't realise P5 had representation there. Fair point. Still this was clearly a P5 connection and not a PQ2 connection. I think there are better choices for characters more associated with Nintendo. |
It doesn't matter what's more of a connection. It's a connection nonetheless. Not only is Persona 5 heavily crossed over in PQ2 on Nintendo 3DS, but Joker specifically appears in the game also. So not just does the IP have a connection to Nintendo, but the specific character does as well.

But Snake came to the GC (also, Konami will probably re-release the original MGs games ad nauseam, now that they can't really make new ones). And Cloud represents the whole FF series, which has been on Nintendo since the original. |
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes was on Gamecube, and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D was on the 3DS as well. Also, I think that people forget Cloud Strife appears in the Kingdom Hearts games. "Chain of Memories" was on the Gameboy Advance and "Re:Coded" was on the Nintendo DS, and Cloud appeared in both of those games. Cloud also made appearances on the 3DS in the Final Fantasy "Theatrhythm" and "Explorers" games. So, yeah, it's not even just a vague Final Fantasy connection. Cloud has made multiple appearances on Nintendo platforms.

Cloud literally join like two years ago (2016).
