I hope not, I really like Obsidian and don't want to stop supporting them

This and it's bad PR snaking studios, they need to grow their own or they'll only build spite among gamers like they did with RoTR. As well as the catastrophe waiting to happen of a studio that is perceived to be locked down releases a bad game on the next box... it'll bite them royally. They'll be seen as the EA like studio killer.

Just grow your studios MS. Don't snake the talent when you're an underdog. No one will route for you eith tactics like that and you'll not only hurt yourselves but the studios you acquire and the industry as a whole. I'm one of the people who was routing for you after e3 and such amazing steps being put into place, I even overlooked the NinjaTheory buy as something that wad needed for headlines to push the other news of growing four other studios which was one of my favourite developers (Heavenly sword, DMC reboot, Hellblade). I like obsidian less, as they are hit and miss but these tactics are something that makes me feel spite and much, much less likely to buy your next box even if Obsidian make a Divinity tier ARPG or a New Vegas tier third person RPG.

Just grow your own talent and cultivate it and you have a chance at reaching Sony and Nintendo levels in 6-20 years and I'll be aboard to throw my money to support that growth. But this... just count me out.

You should tell that to Sony as well.

As others have already pointed out to you, about half of Sony's first party was acquired as well, not built from the ground up.

MS already announced 1 new from the ground up studio, The Initiative, and I wouldn't be surprised if they open another in the next 2 years as well. MS can't afford to build all of their new 1st party studios from the ground up like you want though, building a brand new studio from the ground up takes time, it can take as much as a year to staff a new studio up to AAA size with talented devs, and that would mean another year before those studios could start properly developing their first game, which would push the release of their first game into the middle of next gen. MS needs studios now so that they can have exclusives out within the first 2 years of the next Xbox's release, if they don't they will fall massively behind Sony in sales again and lose yet another generation by a large margin. There are also rumors of Google entering the console business next gen, and Google has the money and name power to push alot of sales, MS doesn't want to end up 4th place if that happens. Microsoft's best bet for next gen is exactly what they are doing, expanding their 1st party with both brand new and acquired studios.

Translation: I have no real rebuttal.

OT: Great purchase if true, will definitely bolster their first party, give us Xbots an RPG.

Do you also spite Sony for buying Naughty Dog, Media Molecule, Sucker Punch, Evolution, Sony Liverpool, Bend, Geurilla Games, Polyphony, etc? Those werent exactly grown from the ground up.

If you were to take a closer look at the developers you've listed, do you think you could find differences that would mark any of them as poor comparisons to the potential MS purchase of Obsidian?

These are perfectly fair comparisons. Both, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft Studios have purchased existing studios that were independent beforehand.

He criticized Microsoft for buying developers instead of creating them for the ground up, yet Sony has done largely the same.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Like I said before, as long as they have creative freedom then it's a fantastic idea.

Is there much precedent for that?
