Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Kotaku- Microsoft is close to buying Obsidian Entertainment

I don't mind this move, but Microsoft needs to go after GAAS games imo. Can you imagine if Microsoft bought rocket league and pubg out? That would be very huge.

Would be a good move for Microsoft it it happens. I haven't actually played an Obsidian game since KOTOR 2, but that was fantastic (and much better than Bioware's KOTOR).

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks KOTOR 2 was better. It was rougher around the edges with alot of bugs and stuff, but that is only because Lucas Arts forced them to release it with only 16 months of development, which is not alot for a AAA game at all. There is no doubt that the characters, story, and gameplay in KOTOR 2 were better than KOTOR 1 however.

Fallout New Vegas and South Park The Stick of Truth were great as well. Obsidian is definitely AAA capable, they just need the budget to do it. Hopefully MS gives them the budget for both a AAA RPG team and a AA RPG team so they can continue making games like Pillars of Eternity for the PC folks.

R.I.P to Turn-based RPG games from Obsidian.....

I rather liked Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2 as well.
This is sad news, if their gonna make xbox exclusive games in the future and likely not the turn based story drive dungeons & dragons style rpgs...
for everyone.

I think this is bad news, as a fan of their latest works.

Did you read the article?

"A person familiar with goings-on at Microsoft said the company has been looking to bolster its PC development, which makes the PC-focused Obsidian a perfect fit."

But instead of makeing AA sized, turn based isometric rpgs (like pillars of eternity).... that go onto Steam + GoG.com

Now we ll get AAA sized action rpgs, that only go to windows store + xbox.... Atleast thats my fear (thats still a bolstered pc development).

Good news

Not a big fan of obsidian but hopefully they come up with something good once acquired

Obsidian isn't really a company people praise a lot, but its a studios that has worked on a numerous well received games. Whether it be Fallout: New Vegas, Southpark: Stick of Truth, KOTOR2, or Pillars of Eternity.

If MS is buying this studio, that tells me they want to create some RPGs. Something their 1st party lineup lacks at the moment.

I hope not, I really like Obsidian and don't want to stop supporting them

This and it's bad PR snaking studios, they need to grow their own or they'll only build spite among gamers like they did with RoTR. As well as the catastrophe waiting to happen of a studio that is perceived to be locked down releases a bad game on the next box... it'll bite them royally. They'll be seen as the EA like studio killer.

Just grow your studios MS. Don't snake the talent when you're an underdog. No one will route for you eith tactics like that and you'll not only hurt yourselves but the studios you acquire and the industry as a whole. I'm one of the people who was routing for you after e3 and such amazing steps being put into place, I even overlooked the NinjaTheory buy as something that wad needed for headlines to push the other news of growing four other studios which was one of my favourite developers (Heavenly sword, DMC reboot, Hellblade). I like obsidian less, as they are hit and miss but these tactics are something that makes me feel spite and much, much less likely to buy your next box even if Obsidian make a Divinity tier ARPG or a New Vegas tier third person RPG.

Just grow your own talent and cultivate it and you have a chance at reaching Sony and Nintendo levels in 6-20 years and I'll be aboard to throw my money to support that growth. But this... just count me out.

That's exactly what Sony did though. They didn't "grow" Naughty Dog. They purchased them just like MS are potentially doing here...

Yeah im anxious to see the results of all these purchases when next gen comes.

Do you also spite Sony for buying Naughty Dog, Media Molecule, Sucker Punch, Evolution, Sony Liverpool, Bend, Geurilla Games, Polyphony, etc? Those werent exactly grown from the ground up.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.
