Forums - Gaming - Final Fantasy VI Vs Chrono Trigger:- Whos the king of SNES RPGs?

King of the SNES RPGs? Easy.

Earthbound =)

OT: For staying in the bounds of what the topic asks I would say Chrono Trigger hands down, multiple endings, very innovative battle system, epic story, never would have guessed it to be a SNES game it was something ahead of its time, though personally if Chrono Trigger is King then Earthbound is the Emperor, ruling all with style.

I haven't read the thread, but the answer is 'neither--Super Mario RPG owns face!'

I remember having this conversation w/some of my friends back in the 90's, hahaha. Well actually it was more like I thought FFVI was the best, my other friend preferred Chrono Trigger and my other friend thought Secret of Mana was best. I still prefer FFVI, but all the games are really great! SNES FTW! :D

Yes, the only one with a really interesting character-building scheme. (And FF4 with no character building whatsoever. ;))

An interesting character development scheme crippled by ridiculous amounts of grinding, and a story that rivals the NES Final Fantasies in terms of flatness (featuring a final boss with the most ridiculous name since Death Adder). FF5 beats FF6 in terms of gameplay and character building, but loses in pretty much everything else.

On topic: I'd put Chrono Trigger over FF6, simply because of the gameplay mechanics. IMO they're pretty much even in other aspects, but in Chrono Trigger all of your characters are actually usable in a fight.

I don't know what you're talking about where grinding is concerned.  I've beaten the game twice, and I didn't have to grind at all either time.  I'll grant you that the story wasn't as epic as 4 or 6, but it was plenty engaging.  Excellent music made for plenty of gripping/touching scenes.

Anyway, if you want to talk story, FF4 and CT both win.  FF6 starts really strong, but the story was ruined along with its world in the second half of the game.

Yeah, i agree with that.  Though i think the FF5 battle system had a problem that FF6 had... if i remember correctly.  Not unique enough.

Personally I like when characters are very optimizable but still keep a few traits and moves.

For me it's FFVI hands down...
Just because of Kefka, he's second to none as far as villains go, equaled only ever by the Joker (they have a lot in common, they're evil incarnate, and so evil they dare to laugh about it, no remorse, no second thought, not even an elegant demeanor, just evil for evil's sake)
I don't mean that CT was bad in any way, i loved every second of that game, it's just that the feeling from FFVI, f**is one of the only games that actually brought a tear to my eyes..
I could play it all over again...

Listen to the voice of reason, then do as I say.

I disagree. I think the story is even better in the 2nd half. The only problem is that you have to work for the story in the World of Ruin. It goes from a very structured liniear story to a very spread out, free roaming story where you can miss important facts and where you can occasionally be lost as to what you have to do.

Some of the stuff in the 2nd half of the game has more character development then most RPGs have in a whole game.

Of the two, I'd definitely choose FFVI. But, I'd have to say that FFIV, for me, was just as good.

While I enjoyed the FF's that followed, it was enough that the perfection was duplicated from IV to VI, sadly, I don't think it'll ever happen again.

IMO the best moments in the entire game were in the 2nd half.  With the exception of Terra's side quest and maybe a couple others, they were all excellent. The only thing the 1st half has to compare with it is the coin flip between Sabin and Edgar.

I should've been more specific - I meant grinding for AP's and job levels. FF5's job system is great for customizing your characters and their abilities, but the AP grinding takes forever, especially if you want some of the more useful abilities in the early parts of the game. EXP grinding is pretty much unnecessary, I'll give you that, since the game isn't that hard or off-the-wall random (FF3, I'm looking at you).

My main problem with the storyline is that it's the same "n+/-1 warriors of light defeat generic evil villain #578.2 with the power of crystals x, y and z" that has been redone since FF1. I've just finished playing FF3:s DS makeover, and while at least the inter-PC relations have been improved (meaning that they actually exist), the gist of the storyline is pretty much the same thing, and it shows.

Off Topic - I should probably play the FF4 DS conversion when it comes out - I beat FF4 once years ago and can't really remember too much about it.
