Forums - Gaming - Jim Sterling’s site under attack after Zelda: BotW review

As I said in another post, if it is valid for Jim Sterling to accuse Zelda fans for the DDoS attack, then it is equally valid for Zelda fans to accuse Mr. Sterling of dishonesty. I love the guy, but this time, I'm not taking sides.

“Simple minds have always confused great honesty with great rudeness.” - Sherlock Holmes, Elementary (2013).

DDOS'ing is obviously silly, but I don't think anyone should be surprised.

There is always someone who recognizes an opportunity for traffic in this sort of situation, and it's not just video games. I recall in the NBA both Shaq and LeBron were 1 vote shy of being the unanimous MVPs, and said 1 vote immediately had an article ready to explain why and so forth.

If I had to guess who would be the one to offer a lower score it would have been Jim, so that isn't remotely surprising; this is the sort of thing that's made him popular.

The Slate 6/10 is a bit more random, especially given that, according to the reviewer's recent grades, that means Dragonball Fusion is the superior game lol

Still, it's absolutely not a mere coincidence that the only reviews to come out a week after all the others did are mixed. Those who offered their initial reviews had no idea how high this thing would rate, and it must have appeared an almost irresistible opportunity to be the lone global dissenters that, obviously, they both elected not to resist lol

It's a clickbait grade. The odds of the only two reviewers to review the grade after it achieved a 98 sincerely feeling it deserved a 60-70 when the previous low was a 90 is virtually nonexistent. These grades were made with all of the other grades in mind.

Some ppl still think jimquisition makes money from ads ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This BS again. Where is the point of reviews when only people allowed to review are the ones who like the game?

Reviews are a service to the consumer, which includes all consumers. Yes, also people who are more weary of open world games. How would they be properly informed if not someone like them reviews the game? They would actually think the game is worth their time because no one would've pointed out the general flaws this and other open world games have.

This is true ofc but then there is the genre that has to be considered. For instance, i don't like sports games in general, hence i cannot review them properly. I think the reviewer has to be reviewing games, that he generaly likes to play and then give a better and more subjective opinion on the matter.

That's where you are wrong. You don't need to be a professional progamer to review a game. You could just as easily review a game on the merits of the noob player experience. If its mechanics are not enticing to you or it's too hard, that is part of the review and will give people who are in a similar situartion as you the perfect guide. Imagine only fighting game lovers would write fighting game reviews. They could never ever give an accurate assessment of the new player experience.

Every review is valuable because it covers all aspects of a game from all kinds of POVs.

I mean, look at me. I'm trying to be as weary of Nintendo fanboys as I can but even I am constantly swayed by the pure hype stream that's everywhere. Only so I can be extra disappointed. I would love if there were more reviwers who put similar weight on things like I do.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Just because you dont like a genre it doesnt mean that you cannot have intimate knowledge about how it works. That still doesnt rule out the possibility that the review might be objective. I mean I am not a huge fan of racing games but I could still pretty much explain every major mechanic they used in the last 20 years mostly because in my spare time I had plenty of time to play the games from the genre.

I don't think he'd ever be outright dishonest in a review.

I do think it's possible that while he truly didn't enjoy certain aspects of the game, he may play up the extent to which these aspects bothered him in order to make his review stand out a bit from the crowd.

It's tough out there for web personalities. You constantly have to fight for a limited resource konwn as attention. I think it's silly to believe that this kind of stuff doesn't enter their heads sometimes.

It's probably sillier to freak out about "bad" review scores though.

Let's take baseball for instance. I dont even have a clue of the rules, netheir how it is played. Am i a legitimate reviewer for it?

Here's Jimquisition for you...
Hyrule Warriors Legends on 3DS - 95
Twilight Princess HD -88
Triforce Heroes: 80
Breath of the Wild - 70

"7/10 is a good score". I see that. I see the other scores Breath of the Wild and other Zelda games and I just say...

C'mon man.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

I suppose there is no accounting for taste.

I love Breath of the Wild. Best game of the past five years probably.

I don't know if I like it more than Twilight Princess though. They're just two totally different things.

Sure is his opinion, but i think he is a total moron. If you don't like the game give some valid reason according to your previous reviews. He doesn't likes the stamina bar, but yet in the dark souls series it's ok. "Pausing" the game to change weapons it's bad, but in fallout 4 it's great.

It's all about implementation and how much it detracts from the rest of the game. Also how useless it is. Taking away stamina and durability from the game would do nothing to the enjoyment of the game, in contrary.

I agree on weapon durability. I think Zelda does great with the clothing, different pieces that can be upgraded. Weapons could have been similar.

I disagree on stamina. Stamina adds to the gameplay, it restricts your abilties to swim, glide or climb and you can increase it temporarily or permanently. This is cool and adds enjoyment, as it makes some things more of a challenge. Could you climb a mountain endless or do you have to look for ledges while climbing? And it makes getting the ability that creates updrafts for your glider a lot more fun. The alternatives to stamina for climbing are: no climbing, climbing only predefined mountains (maybe increasing the mountains to climb as you progress in game) or a fixed amount of climbing you can do. Same goes for swimming and gliding. I think these all are bad options, having complete freedom as a player to decide which mountain to scale and plan your route or cook meals especially for this is a cool challenge. So stamina is a clear win.
