Obviously the NPD group consider it's in the same generation.

Not the first time that analysts are wrong. |
Nor you and others that want to see Switch as a 9th gen
Y'all are arguing on which console better fairs as a home console, PS4 or Switch... GUYS C'MON.
It's a hybrid. It has the advantage as a handheld and home console, that's where its biggest appeal comes from. Seems kind of pointless to compare Switch to PS4 when only talking in terms of home console.
The two should be compared in things like attach rates, how many hours spent on them (that's super difficult though, especially with PS4) rather than power. Nintendo has proven so many times that they don't need graphics to dominate. The DS/Wii era proved that, especially since during the Gamecube era, the Gamecube was the strongest console and yet it sold the least amount out of the PS2 and Xbox OG.
So srsly guys. STAAAHP

It actually is. Its a gaming device so there is a certain competition. Not as much as between PS4 and xbox for sure.
But in todays global market, basically everything competes with each others in the market.
It competes with the PS4 and xbox one when kids get ONE gaming console for xmas. It does even compete with a smartphone to some degrees (decide wether you put your 300$ towards a switch or a smartphone).
But in terms of generations, its 9th gen scince its the successor of the 8th gen consoles 3ds and wiiu. So in that regrad, it is in the same boat with the successor of the ps5 and xbox one.

Gens are stupid at this point. If we had to stick by them, the only definition that makes any sense is Switch being 9th gen (or 8.5th gen if you wanna call it) alongside PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. But really, we're just heading into a time where each company does whatever the hell they want, generations as they were are no more. |
I agree. This concept is not relevant anymore when you want to compare consoles currently in the market between them.

Logically speaking, if Switch and PS4 are the same generation, then Switch must also be in the same generation as the 3DS and Wii U. Since that doesn't make sense, Switch is not a part of the same generation as the PS4. |
Why ? There is not a rule behind this categorization.
If Nintendo launch a new home console at the same time of PS5 and Next Xbox, would you call this new Nintendo Console as 10th gen and PS5/Next-XB as 9th gen ?
But in the end, regardless of the generation, what matters are only the concurrent consoles present on the market at the same time.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Great job of making a fool of yourself, OP! Where are you now? Would love to hear more of your genius insight. What have you got to say for yourself now? Are you still going to force yourself to carry on believing in your own hopes and delusions? Maybe we should see if we can get you a job alongside Pachter.

Show me where I can go buy a PS5. I wasn't aware that it is out in the market, let alone announced, displayed, previewed or given any details.
burninmylight said: I just realized something... You know how it used to be true that in every console generation (at least since the 32-bit era), the console considered most powerful from a tech standpoint has never been the sales leader up until now? The PS4 is looking like it's going to break that streak, but if the Switch can catch it in lifetime sales, then the streak remains alive. |
You should hear reviewtechusa's spin on it. According to him, the most powerful console lost every generation due to a unique fluke. N64 lost because of carts and a third party exodus. MS lost because it was new to the market vs the PS2. Wii won because it was a fad.
Or to put it another way...
Being easy to make games for trumps better graphics and no load times (PS1/N64).
Having good third party support and consumer confidence trumps better graphics (Xbox/PS2).
Being half the price of the competition and a good early lineup trumps graphics (PS3/360/Wii).
It's almost as if anything and everything is more important than graphics to your average consumer.

Utter nonsense. The generational categorization is moot when there is no fictional PS5, with "mid-gen" upgrades being released. The Switch is competing with the PS4 or whatever else is on the market right now. It's that simple.
