It actually is. Its a gaming device so there is a certain competition. Not as much as between PS4 and xbox for sure.
But in todays global market, basically everything competes with each others in the market.
It competes with the PS4 and xbox one when kids get ONE gaming console for xmas. It does even compete with a smartphone to some degrees (decide wether you put your 300$ towards a switch or a smartphone).
But in terms of generations, its 9th gen scince its the successor of the 8th gen consoles 3ds and wiiu. So in that regrad, it is in the same boat with the successor of the ps5 and xbox one.
