Forums - Nintendo - I think I'm sold on the Nintendo NX because I think I know the info we are missing

720p resolution is way too low for a good VR experience, the Samsung setup uses screens with far higher resolution on their phones, but if Nintendo uses that you are talking about an NX that's $300+.

Also the Tegra X1/X2 don't have the juice to produce great graphics for VR. The PS4 struggles with it as is, the XBox One doesn't even seem to try ... you need more than the horsepower of a portable chip to get a good VR experience. PS4 Neo and Scorpio are along the lines of what you need for a VR experience.

I would say that the requirements in terms of graphics is very subjective. The benchmark is so high because everyone is aiming for traditional looking games, often with realistic or high quality graphics. VR is a compelling experience but people rarely come away talking about how the graphics blew their mind. The one demo I tried with oculus was a rollercoaster game with terrible graphics, I was still blown away. Its important to be presentable but resolution aside games have been pretty presentable for over a decade.

Nintendo graphical targets for VR would clearly be very different from what a lot of developers are doing and thankfully so.

Haha, that's one of the few reasons I would not buy the console.

Preach it, Cloudman. ^^

If you think you know it, you obviously don't know it. Not saying it won't happen though. It's possible but I think it's quite far-fetched. That is, I don't think it's happening.

VR isn't exactly ideal for all kinds of games, and especially the games Nintendo usually releases are something that VR might not work all that well with. In general, you're best off in first-person games where the player doesn't have to move around (as a character, so spaceships for example are OK). Third-person platformers where characters are running and jumping around are pretty much the opposite in terms of games where you have a character of some sort. And that's just ignoring technical aspects.

The other problem with VR is it's simply not very kid friendly.

Grown adults still get motion sickness from VR, strap one of those things onto a little 9 year old and there's a fair chance he might puke all over the carpet. Don't think mommy is going to be too happy about that.

I don't think Nintendo has a lot of interest in VR. It goes against a lot of their "mom approved" principals of gaming.

Beyond that they don't have the tech for it from the sounds of it. 720p LCD would create an awful VR experience, it's simply not high res enough.

In such an event I don't think it would mean Ninetendo forcing its games to be VR, they would make cheap, fun VR experience like Wii Play/Wii Sports etc.

VR experiences are antithesis of Wii Play/Sports. One brings people together. Other seperates them from those sitting next to them. Just wanted to comment on that portion. I think it would be really bad strategy.

The emphasis there was on the presence of made for purpose experiences, beyond that both rely on novelty. If the NX had VR experiences on it that wouldn't take away from the couch, 4player Mario Kart/Smash Bros/Party game experiences that are obviously on the way. We also have to remember that the NX is a handheld device which is typically in possession of one person. Not everything Nintendo does has to relate to social experience, both the DS (dual screen) and especially the 3DS (3D screen) had USPs which were about impacting a single individuals experience of the game they were playing. Similarly the gamepad was used for assymetric multiplayer experiences as well as single player.

After being told the screen resolution requirements are very high (more than 1080p?), I don't believe Nintendo will do VR with the NX but otherwise I don't see whats wrong with using it as one of many USPs for the system.

Interesting theory, but it's not happening.

In that case, it wouldn't make any sense for Nintendo to build a whole console around VR. If it's not a central feature, it should probably not be in. One does not simply add proper VR support cheaply.
