The other problem with VR is it's simply not very kid friendly.
Grown adults still get motion sickness from VR, strap one of those things onto a little 9 year old and there's a fair chance he might puke all over the carpet. Don't think mommy is going to be too happy about that.
I don't think Nintendo has a lot of interest in VR. It goes against a lot of their "mom approved" principals of gaming.
Beyond that they don't have the tech for it from the sounds of it. 720p LCD would create an awful VR experience, it's simply not high res enough.
