Forums - Sports Discussion - How well did your nation perform at the olympics?

Australia, worst performance in decades, seems to be serious attitude problems with a lot of athletes, fame has gone to their head so much they have forgotten why they were actually there.

It started off slow, with our swimming getting none and judo only one bronze while normally we could count on at least a few with some golds. Then, pretty much every "expected" gold medal didn't happen and almost all our golds were won by those we didn't expect to win. The second week was better, we won most of the gold medals during the second week, though there was a third mass-disappointment when we didn't win anything in the equestrian competitions and our hockey teams failed. So there's a bit of a mixed feeling, happy about some things, sad about others.

All-in-all, mostly due to the surprise medals, Netherlands still got to 19 total with 8 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 4 bronze medals to finish 11th in the medal table. Pretty decent, one less in total than London but 2 more were gold. 1 more gold than Beijing and 4 more than Athens, though in Athens we won 22 total. Rio didn't come close to the record in Sydney however, which was 25 with 12 of them gold. We can't really complain about Rio, but then again complaining about something is in Dutch people's nature.

GB&NI - Best away games ever, we won loads in the cycling as we usually do which helps. Lottery Funding is really starting to show how it has improved things. But there was concern raised as the funding is also based on performance so while things like Cycling gets loads of money, Volley Ball or Table Tennis won't get any because we don't do well in those sports.

According to the BBC show before the closing I watch yesterday, there were more nations with golds and medals in general than there usually are.

Hmm, pie.

GB had their best games in almost a century, even better then 2012, we had the second highest haul of golds as well.

Brazil did pretty good imo, but I was wondering, is there a lot of focus on sports there apart from Football ?
Also, great job on the pole vault, that final jump from da Silva was insane, and broke our hearts in France :P
It was quite a performance.

Football is the only sport that has a huge focus here.

All the other sports are majoritary ignored by the media AND audiences - so the bad behavior of people in events like gymnastics, table tennis, swimming etc. People don´t know how those sports work, they´re only seen on Tv during Olympic Games or Panamerican Games, with a few exceptions. So they think that football rivalries apply to everything. (As a brazilian, I fell embarrassed)

Most sports here suffer lack of public interest and lack of incentiments. There are a few public programs that help athletes to have a way of living - the most notable is the Armed Forces program - hence the military poses on many medal ceremonies by brazilian athletes, and anohter program that takes part of the national lottery sales to fund and keep our national federations. These programs really help athletes to stand out in sports like gymastics and handball, b ut on clubs/schools/universities the situation is really complicated. We´re too dependent on the casual discovery of talents rather than producing talents.

Awful, 4 bronze. Norway just isn't a summer-sports nation. Just think during the winter Olympics we got 11 gold, 5 silver and 10 bronze

That's an amazing achievement to get 11 golds in the winter olympics for a nation of 5 million people. You would have done even better as well if the russians weren't doping.

Well, let me just put this here, Ryan Lochte wins Gold medal for lying.

CPU: Ryzen 7950X
GPU: MSI 4090 SUPRIM X 24G
Motherboard: MSI MEG X670E GODLIKE
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR PLATINUM 32GB DDR5
SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade 4TB
Gaming Console: PLAYSTATION 5

Germany got 42 medals. 17 of them were gold medals. 5th place overall. Very proud of this result.

Canada ended with 22 medals and 4 gold. That's a jump from London and is higher than normal for summer olympics. Narrowly missed out on many more medals as well, could have been closer to 30, darn those 4th place finishes!

Surprised by the results, we usually are not as great in the summer as we are the winter, so us doing better is welcomed.

No matter how much money we throw at table tennis we're not going to beat the chinese and volleyball only has two medals up for grabs.
