Forums - Gaming - Eurogamer: Nintendo NX is a portable console with detachable controllers (It also connects to your TV, and runs cartridges)

I'm having a lot of trouble visualizing what it looks like.

Its a tablet.

It goes into a docking station, which has wires hooked up to your tv.

You use a controller like the "pro controller from wii u".

When you want to go outsides and game, you unhook the tablet, from the docking station, and take that with you.

This isnt a real home console.

This is a handheld, that you can hook up to your tv.

Its main focus is on the handheld market where they basically have a monopoly, instead of trying to compete with PS4 & XB1.

This is a good thing if true. It means Nintendo will have to make sure there are a lot of high quality new titles on the NX.

Or that we're going to see a nauseating level of "remasters" and other games we already own being released. Just look at PS4 and Xbox One if you don't think that's a possibility. Hopefully, that's not the case with the NX.

If it can somehow run 400-500 GFLOP in portable state, it could probably run PS4 games at 960x540 resolution (1/4th the pixels).

Home dock could then bump that up to 720p-1080p.

That wouldn't be bad, but the Tegra X1 at 500 GFLOP runs pretty hot apparently, like 20 watts, now a die shrink to 16nm and more efficient Tegra X2 could bring that down considerably.

Lets say 50 GFLOPS/watt ... yeah maybe I guess. The battery for this thing will have to be quite large but the Wii U tablet was monstrous too.

Yeah this is what I think.

Portable it ll run 540p, and in docking station it ll run most games in 720p (if it gets 3rd party).

1st party Nintendo games will run 1080p (once docked).

Yeah Tegra X1 uses like 21watts to do those 512 Gflops... which is alot for a mobile chip.

However thats like a 20nm chip? maybe if they got it shrunk down to 16nm FinFETs? it would use like 12watts or so?

That should be doable as long as it has a good battery.

So basically confirms that the NX won't be very powerful. but what level will it be? At Wii level? Or Wii U? It's a pity they can no longer push boundaries.

At least their portable idea is good.

Powerful enough to run the new Sonic game and the new Dragon Quest apparantly. So... at least close to current gen consoles.

But... power close to the new consoles in portable form means a higher price point. :x

Isn't Dragon Quest also coming to the 3DS?

I like the concept but I guess they'll have to sacrifice power in order to get better battery life. Hopefully it's not priced above $300 (IF the rumor is true).

This would be a heck of a lot more plausible if not for Pokemon Sun and Moon. That's the big holiday earner for Nintendo and I absolutelu do not see them destroying the hype by announcing that the 3DS successor is coming out mere months after Sun and Moon. Not that it wouls make Pokemon fail but certainly underperform.

Pokemon Black and White 2 came AFTER the 3DS was released.

Different version.

Well... i suppose it could be much weaker and run the 3DS version of Dragon quest and have a 3DS like version of Sonic 2017. But i could swear that squeenix meant the console version of DQ11.

That's actually a pretty good deal!!

This is what i think as well. A super powerful 300 euro Tablet that can play Nintendo Exclusives, plus exclusive 3rd party games thats not on normal Android tablets and Android games would be pretty amazing. And id imagine many gamer looking for a new portable would pick one up.

This would fast become the tablet of choice for gamers, and probably kids and families as well.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

In a year imagine when Nintendo cut the price down to $250 and throw in some Amiibo ... yeah could see this becoming very popular with kids.

Gotta have those Android apps though (doesn't need to run Android per se, just the apps, which Nintendo could do with a forked version of Android).
