Forums - Nintendo - Pokemon Go Success Shows That Nintendo Should Go Full Mobile and call Quits on Consoles/Handhelds!

I hope they focus more on Android/iOS because that's where the money is. Releasing on other consoles like PlayStation and Xbox? Nah, that's a wrecked ship everyone is slowing leaving. If it's about releasing console games, they should keep releasing on their own machine.

About smartphone games, a full Pokémon game on smart devices would blow minds away, but at the same time it would be a different concept, full of microtransactions and other things that plague the mobile market.

I think they will ultimately abandon the dedicated console business, just like Sony and Microsoft will, PCs and smart devices are overtaking the gaming market, that's just a matter of time, but I hope they hold onto the hardware division until the very end. They still make good games and good concepts that only work if they have their hardware.

I agree with you, tbone. That mentality it's not good. Going 100% on something (like mobile) it's too risky in the current market. I applaud Nintendo's decision to diversify and have both mobile and hardware&software bussiness running at the same time. It helps to become a healthy company with less risk.

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

O hope not.
Being in the mobile market and making a boat load of money off of it like they are now is definitely a great safety net to have and I agree that if they maintain this momentum they built with Pokémon GO that mobile will very well become one of their main if not THE main source of revenue and profit for them in the future. But I don't want them to go fully mobile for a number of reasons. For one, mobile gaming, from a controller standpoint just plain sucks. Using a touch screen in a 3D Mario game to make Mario jump while moving with an analog stick that's... also on the touch screen? No thanks!
Secondly, how would they be able to make and sell games like Breath of the Wild, games that push the creative and interactive boundaries and limits of their franchises and bring to reality the type of world and games that the developers and their fans have dreamed of for a long time on a device that's the size of your hand and not on a dedicated console or gaming system like the Wii U/NX/PS4/XBO/ or PC?
I don't think we'd get games like that on smartphones and tablets and even if we do they wouldn't run or play anywhere near what they'd be capable of, they might get there at some point but that's waaaaaaay down the road.

Am I really seeing people play "everybody picks on Nintendo" card? On VGC? The place where you say one slightest thing out of place (justified or not) against Nintendo and you get a shit storm?

So what is exactly wrong of predicting Nintendo dropping hardware? Hardware will carry a bigger financial risk than software so why roll the dice every gen and chance ending up losing big. Not only can poor hardware sales lose you money but it vastly reduces the install base to sell your first party games. First party games have always been Nintendo's strongest point so why not play to those strengths?

Nintendo have a good catalogue of IP's and IP's that will sell well on mobile and appeal to casual gamers (Sony and MS can not even come close to the wide appeal of Nintendo games). So now they have a taste of mobile, do they take the "easy" road and pump all their resources into mobile? Where they are guaranteed a huge install base? Not have to worry about making hardware and if it will fail or succeed. Will the NX be the final chance for hardware to prove itself? Will Nintendo phase out home consoles and go with mobile and handhelds?

Because I'm putting these questions forward doesn't mean I want Nintendo to fail. In fact it will be a sad day if Nintendo stops making hardware but this doesn't stop Nintendo making business decisions that they see best going forward for them and is out of our control

I think they will give NX all their effort, but we're witnessing a seismic shift in Nintendo's history (and as such in gaming history as a whole), mobile in now going to be a key pillar of their business if not flat out their main pillar.

No way would Pokemon Go have even 1/20th of this reach if it was just a $40 3DS game.

There are kinda two ways this could go

1.) Because mobile is so successful, NX and any other Nintendo hardware merely needs to do "OK" on the market, Nintendo platforms become basically low cost Nintendo-centric platforms maybe where you can also play Android/iOS apps too. Nintendo having their own hardware allows their IP to retain a certain "special" status and allow them to focus their fanbase on certain new IP (like say Splatoon).

or

2.) Nintendo's investors seeing that Nintendo is doing gangbusters on non-Nintendo platforms like iOS and Android may feel that limiting Nintendo IP to Nintendo hardware is limiting their profit potential and may push for broader multi-platform usage of their IP to the widest audience possible.

I could see either happening.

I think they should dump consoles, but never the handheld! I would love it if Nintendo went handheld + mobile only.

Nintendo is still going to release the NX. They've gone too far down that path to turn back, now. However, with the rumors we have heard (basically Wii U 2.0), I don't see the NX being a success. Not when it's supposedly underpowered compared to the OG PS4, let alone the Neo. However, the success of Pokemon Go definitely gives Nintendo a path out of console HW. I still hope they publish games on the PS4, but they may just stick to mobile gaming, which is closer to their most successful market, handhelds.

Well, they didn't go full Amiibo with Amiibo's success...

There are two outcomes to aggressively going mobile in any capacity: outright failure, or a marked shift in the quality we want. There's a reason King and companies that make exclusively games similar to King are the ones succeeding, and it's because of predatory microtransactions. If you want Nintendo to go mobile, you're asking for the world to lose the Nintendo we all want.

Plus, Nintendo isn't even doing anything here besides profiting. They didn't make the game, they licensed somebody else to make it. If anybody seriously wants Nintendo to move it's thousands of employees exclusively to mobile, they likely just don't want to see Nintendo around anymore.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

Funny stuff lol
