Doesn't this just further the idea that Nintendo fans only buy Nintendo games, or Nintendo-like games, and thus third parties shouldn't bother with it unless they're going to make a game that "appeals to the fan base"?

Which gives you the same situation the Wii U and 3DS are in now.

Why do people think the next platform is going to get more support than either of those platforms?

Sorta but the same goes for PS/XB. Those consoles in the west are primarily bought for online shooters, open world action, sports/racing sims, fighting games which leads to the vast majority of retail releases coming from those genres.

On the other hand, genres like platformers, party/local multiplayer, puzzle, life simulators, turn-based RPGs are more fitted for the Nintendo audience so it makes more sense to release games in these genres on such devices if u want a game to succeed.

It all comes down to demographics and genres that fit in with the userbase, if u want a game to be successful on a platform than release a game that appeals to the primary audience of said platform.

3rd parties need to pay attention to what games actually sell on Nintendo systems. The 3rd party launch titles for the WiiU were all focused on being M rated, instead of focusing on what the audience interested on the WiiU actually wanted. I bet that, if instead of all of those 3rd parties, the WiiU just got Minecraft as a 3rd party launch game, they system would have faired better the first year.

Tbh those launch titles were ports of older games, Mass Effect Trilogy was out at a cheaper price when the 3rd game hit Wii U, Arkham and Deus Ex were out for over a year and anyone interested in any or all of these games would have already bought them long ago, some of the other games like Injustice never got DLCs of other versions despite being more expensive or Sniper (or what ever it's called) missing half the modes. Minecraft would have helped much better yes but Minecraft is its own subculture it's in the same boat as franchises like Pokemon, 3rd parties don't just need to pay attention to the type of games selling on the platform they need to manage them better and treat the userbase better then what they currently do otherwise just don't bother bringing the game over as the's no point testing the waters with half assed attempts.

If you're only giving late ports, delaying a said version of a game in favour of other versions, missing DLC and modes that other versions have but still charging full price etc... don't be surprised if the userbase never takes a shine to your games.

Imagine what GTA ports from ps2 would have sold on wii. Same for final fantasy VII to X-2.

Exactly :)

I know, but imagine that if instead of those titles (Batman AC, Deus Ex, ME3, AC3...) 3rd parties bring games as old as those, but more in tune with the Nintendo audience: Sonic Generations, Ni No Kuni (did it have an exclusivity deal? Wasn't it going to be on the DS too?), an old Tales of title... and if you want western games, why not Minecraft, Dragon Age,  even a port of Skyrim/Fallout from the 360 could have faired well enough. Those titles are as old as the ones that came out for the U, and they probably would have had a better reception. Nintendo just came out of the Move&Touch generation, they had enough money to incentivize some of those titles, but they didn't. And yes, 3rd parties should have brought their titles with the same content and quality as the other devices, otherwise complaining that the worst version of the game sold the worst is unfair.

There's no "more in tune with the nintendo audience". There aren't major preference differences, nintendo gamers (like all others) simply won't buy late games sent to die.

I disagree with that. They may not become system sellers, but there's a big difference between a moderate success and a flop. Most of the WiiU launch games flopped, and if instead of that they choose some that became small or moderate profitable, we might have seen a more stable support.

He's right though the userbase or any other for the matter will simply not buy games that are clearly handled like they're giving scraps to a dog, non of those games you mentioned would have faired better when the are newer games coming out and anyone who was interested in them would have already bought them on PS3, PC and 360 for cheaper. ZombiU the most obscure title at launch was the best selling third party launch title and is at 950k, more then the other third party launch games combined, why because even with some of its flaws it was a new title with a genuine effort and the fans recognized that straight away.

If you want to appeal to the userbase you have to go as all in as you do with the other userbases other don't be surprised if you don't get the intended results, third parties themselves have to treat the userbase the same way they would others otherwise no amount of help from Nintendo will change anything.

Since you mentioned zombi U, it's a great example for the opposite. I'm sure it bombed as a late release with less content, no marketing and digital only on ps4 and x1.

Has Zombie U (or just Zombi now, I suppose) even been released for the PS4 and the XBone? It was announced a long time ago, but I have no idea if it's already out or not.

Wasn't it released days after the announcement?
