Innovation or not, it's a blessing with kids. Go play on the gamepad, easy.
Sure you can also do it with a Vita, or any win 10 device with X1 soon, yet it's fully integrated and kid proof on the WiiU.
(Plus the limited range is a blessing in disguise, they can't sneak it into their bedroom like they can with an iPad)

Does this mean Nintendo is confirming we won't have VR in this gen?

1. It's not innovative. touch, gyro and second screen is DS(i). PS4 at least has touch(pad) and gyro.

2. Different controls are not innovative by themselves. Only if they have a major impact on games. And until now Nintendo has done almost exactly what they did before.
