Forums - Sony - Is the PS4 living up to the standards of it's predecessors?

Luckily, the PS4 doesn't have to compete against the PS1 or PS2, they just have to beat the Wii U and Xbox One.

Yeah.

On a serious note, arguments built on comparisons between generations are usually flawed and that's no different here. The main reason for that is the way the third-party market has developed around both Playstation and Xbox. We aren't going to see third-party exclusives at nearly the same rate as with previous generations, which is far from being a negative thing, no matter how you structure your argument in order to give that appearance.

The fact is, when we consider first-party exclusives AND third-party titles, it's a pretty damn good selection with some fantastic looking titles on the horizon for both Sony and Microsoft.

Now, I understand why you want to pretend third-party titles don't exist but they do and they're an important part of video-gaming. That makes the ability to play those third-party titles a pretty nice attribute to have.

i guess all this just really speaks to the horrible state the industry is in.

you might hate thid party exclusives, but i think they are a great thing. the xbox, ps2, and gamecube were all completely different systems and when you have a third party exclusive, you are able to focus solely on the hardware you are working with and make a very unique game that is specific for that platform.

with the way things are now, the consoles are so similar that i guess there is no benefit to focus solely on one system. the way third party exclusives are handled now involve throwing money at a developer rather than enticing them with having the system that can produce the best games.

The vast majority of remasters are from third parties. Sony's only retail remasters so far are TLOU and GOW3.

you're right about that. thanks for pointing that out.

although i do want to point out that they are doing uncharted and beyond as well.

If you analyse things objectively with a bit of recoil you see PS4 will get many more exclusives than PS3, mainly because japanese are more into PS4 ( Nier, star Océan 5, Dragon Quest Heroes , DQ XI , SF V, FF VII remake, Digimon games, etc, and sony studio are much more into PS4 than they were into PS3 ( mainly because PSP support, now they focus only on their home console , so well get amazing games like Gravity Rush 2, Bloodborne, Horizon, Uncharted 4, ratchet and clank, ... )

There are many more localisations this génération so it will be better on japanese side, and there will be many more support from first party studios ( like japan studio , they were doing almost nothing during all PS3 era like they confessed)

So PS4 has everything to get a much greater line up

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

All I care is that this year I have/will have bloodborne, until dawn, persona 5 and dragon quest heroes follow closely by uncharted 4 and ratchet and clank remake early next year. So far I'm satisfied with what I have until the next batch of exclusives come over. Then I have ton of AAA multiplatform games to look forward to . At the end of the day, I will never experience a drought in games thanks to the excellent formula of combining good 1st parties with 3rd parties games.

ok, ill definitely take that. the ps4 does have a lot of third party games. just because something is third party doesnt mean its bad, but i really expected sony to support this system a lot more than it has with big and great innovative titles. i guess that is where my disappointment comes in.

The point is, there won't be another playstation console with the same exclusives level as ps1 and ps2 had because third parties exclusives are over and japanese games aren't as popular as it once were.  That's the reality.  Do I want more exclusives from them? absolutely but the reality is that there are so many good games coming from everywhere that I'm overwhelmed, just the idea of not being able to buy a few of them make me sad.

We all know by now that you are very dissapointed with ps4 and that's fine, not everybody have the same expectations.  You have 2 other consoles to look forward to but your threads always sound as though you have a mission to "open other's people eyes" and that's the part that I don't like about your threads.

I'm happy with my PS4, for it not even being out 2 years yet.

Well no shit it doesn't have as good as library as the PS2 or PS1. This gen is still very young. You're comparing a new born elephant to adult elephants. Gee, I wonder which is bigger or better.

This sort of topic should be discussed in a few years after the gen is well under way.

Right now, the PS4 has double the amount of exclusives as the xbox one and has about the same as the wii u. It's living up to the standards to it's fanbase and to the brand at this point.

It's not horrible at all.  That's like saying it was good for movie fans when the industry was split between VHS and Beta.  It was not.

Third-party games being avaliable on multiple platforms is good for developers, for obvious reasons, and it's good for gamers, as they get an expanded library no matter which device they buy.  From an enjoyment standpoint, I can't see a negative.

The PS1 didn't really do it for me, and while I consider the PS3 a bit better than the PS1 -I feel the PS4 will be better, for me at least. Will it's library be as good as the PS2? hmmm potentially

Bloodborne, Infamous, Resogun, LBP3, Guilty Gear Xrd, Driveclub, Helldivers, and PT are plenty to me for a 20 month old system - and we're slated to get plenty more by the 2 year mark such as Until Dawn, The Tomorrow Children, Tearaway Unfolded, Shadow of the Beast, Fat Princess Adventures, Drawn to Death, Dragon Quest Heroes, and last but certainly not least Persona 5. Then there's those to follow early next year like Uncharted 4, Ratchet and Clank, and (I'm assuming) Rime. Not too shabby at all.

And here you go again.
I'll be waiting for your new thread next month as well.

But do you really think that PS4 (to date) is worthy PS1 and PS2 library, as a JRPG fan?

Ignore my question if you planned to respond (I understand if you wouldn't though). Because the big JRPG's haven't arrived yet and therefor that question is kind of not current.

Though I find it hard to see how the PS4 JRPG's will beat the likes of Final Fantasy IX, Wild Arms, Suikoden II, Legend of Dragoon, Breath of Fire III, Xenogears and Dark Cloud, Dragon Quest VIII and Rogue Galaxy. This is of course not the responsbility of Sony (except LoD) but responsbility of Square Enix, Capcom, Konami (haha), Bandai-Namco and more.

I am a Nintendo fanatic.
