Forums - Nintendo - Reggie: We anticipated that fans would have a negative reaction to Metriod Prime: Federation Force

Poor Federation Force. No matter how good the game turns out, it will be ripped to shreds because it has the Prime title.

prime fans are stupid, they dont understand why the prime in the name is GOOD not bad...  it could have been a Other M spin off

or another other m game.  maybe they will kick other M out of the canon and let prime in...

Again, the game itself is not the problem. The problem is the complete lack of listening from Nintendo.
If they had made a metroid game in the last 2 years, or if one was in the works, this federation thing would be totally ok.

I think this is very similar to Megaman. After years of Capcom ignoring the franchse and fans angrily asking for a new game, the internet raged when Capcom announced that boxart Megaman on Street FighterX Tekken. If Capcom had made a Megaman game prior, people would have laughed at the joke, but people were already angry, so when boxart Megaman came out, people thought it was really disrespectful.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

This game probably would have been received way better if they used any other name than Metroid. Something tells me that a suit in Japan said that it will be better received if it had the Metroid name. I hope that suit is in a time out now. Or being punished by playing the Virtual Boy.

Which makes me wonder - would people have been more excited if they'd called it "Metroid Federation Force"? Or perhaps even go so far as to emphasise the changed focus by calling it "Metroid Marines: Federation Force" (and thereby go for the Added Alliterative Appeal)?

I'm betting Samus will make an appearance in the game in an important role (rather than just a cameo). Perhaps as a pseudo-boss at the start of the (single-player part of the) game, during the "Training" part of the game (which I think would be a clever way to construct the game - start off in "training", and then you're sent out on missions, or something like that).

This from IGN interview with Reggie where he adresses what they could improve on based on the Digital event

"In terms of opportunities for improvement… there are games where you need to have hands-on time to really appreciate. Certainly, Metroid Prime: Federation Force is one of those types of games. We anticipated that consumers would say “Where’s Samus?” and “Where’s my traditional Metroid Prime game?” We anticipated that...."

I kind of have my doubts that they thought people would have a negative reaction to the game, Reggie just making things up to make themself sound better. Interesting that he says that he knows we wanted a regular prime game, but they went with this instead. Oh Nintendo.

Clear misinterpretation of what was said, followed by a thread based on a consequent misrepresentation of what was said.

Reggie says the obvious: Nintendo knows their fans want another Samus based, traditional Metroid Prime game. Nowhere does he say they anticipated a negative reaction to Federation Force. No where does Reggie say they anticipated a reaction as hyperbolic as the petition demanding Federation Force be scrapped.

Reggie, like any other Nintendo executive with half a brain, knows at least some of Nintendo's fan base wants another traditional Prime game. Nowhere in this interview--especially not in the section quoted--does Reggie suggest they knew exactly how negative the fan reaction to Federation Force would be. This is a non-story and another sign of an internet based storm in a teacup, based on a misreading of tea-leaves to suit the established angry narrative.

Nintendo did not do a "real" 3D Metroid for the Wii U because 1) they realized (about the time they released the Wii U) that making HD games took longer and cost more 2) seeing as they knew they were going to be short games for the wii u (especially early on), that they were not going to support it in other ways (by working w 3rd parties, ramping up the VC MUCH faster etc) 3) they decided to skimp in every possible way they could while still being able to act like they were trying

Fro Nintendo to have been able to deliver a real Metroid game by this holiday they would have had to start on it close to launch of the Wii U- They obviously did not, nor did they start on it at any time since then- They did a 2d Donkey Kong instead- a good game but much less time and money to make-
Nintendo decided early on in the Wii U s life cycle to do the least they could and just get by until they were ready for their next console- 3rd parties realized this as well and that is a major reason why they did little to nothing on the Wii U= If Nintendo was not going to support it, that was a good indicator it was not worth their time and resources either-

Nintendo was not anywhere near ready for this generation- but they had to do something and they had to sell it to someone so they did their best used car salesman job and let it rip - They have a loyal following (although a shrinking loyal following) and they took advantage of it

When Nintenod releases a console they believe in, they will act much different toward it than they have the Wii U- Look at the effort they gave to turn around the 3DS- look at what Sony did to turn around the PS3 and MSFT has done to turn around the XB1 now compare those efforts to how Nintendo has responded to the Wii U - totally different-

Agree.

Both are right.

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

Did Reggie also anticipate the Wii U to also be a failure? lol

I think what he meant was that NOA knew US gamers were going to laugh at the game. NOJ are the ones that call the shots within that company. Reggie has no say in what games are shown at E3 or made.

So people would prefer nintendo to not try something new, even if it's in the same universe. People would have criticised them for just making "another metroid", "No new Ideas/ips" ect.
See how the game is first, I think It could be quite fun

What's your basis for that assumption?

Personally, I would've thought people would've been excited for "Prime 4" considering it's been 5 years since the last Metroid was even released.
