I think this is very similar to Megaman. After years of Capcom ignoring the franchse and fans angrily asking for a new game, the internet raged when Capcom announced that boxart Megaman on Street FighterX Tekken. If Capcom had made a Megaman game prior, people would have laughed at the joke, but people were already angry, so when boxart Megaman came out, people thought it was really disrespectful.
