I kind of have my doubts that they thought people would have a negative reaction to the game, Reggie just making things up to make themself sound better. Interesting that he says that he knows we wanted a regular prime game, but they went with this instead. Oh Nintendo.

I think what he meant was that NOA knew US gamers were going to laugh at the game. NOJ are the ones that call the shots within that company. Reggie has no say in what games are shown at E3 or made.
