Microsoft dumped the xbox after only 4 years and the xbox 360 went on to sell 80+ million. Why not? Wii U, while not a total failure, has not lived up to their expectations. I think they have supported as long as reasonably possibly to keep their fans satisfied. I think Nintendo has gone beyond the call of duty with the Wii U. And no they definitely not Sega, Sega had 4 or 5 failures back to back. There was a reason why consumers had lost confidence.

That seems to be the case.. I HOPE Nintendo won't fuck up the NX! They simply can't...

Can't blame you. Its exactly what it looked like, and its not a good thing.

Of course it can. Why would they not? The Wii U has just barely moved at least 10 million units of hardware as of now. Why continue to ride this out for another two more years? Makes no sense. The hardware is just not moving units and the games that are releasing are just appealing to the Nintendo base that is already there, not to gamers who do not have a Wii U. The Xbox was replaced after four years and its successor sold 80+. Hardly a failure by any means. I know why people are using Sega as a comparison point, but Nintendo is not Sega. Sega did not have a successful handheld. Sega's IPs were not and are not as valuable as Nintendo's property, regardless of how eccentric and experimental they were (and Sega was far more experimental than Nintendo back in the 90s).

Four years is not that early. It's been done before. It has succeeded and it has failed. It's a risk Nintendo can take, as they have nothing to lose with the Wii U's relative failure compared to past consoles.

As far as I can tell Nintendo has announced most of their consoles the E3 before the year it came out, so E3 2016 NX announcement ---> 2017 NX release. I just hope they're not going to let the WiiU be a barren wasteland in the meantime....:/

NX is a handheld, thats clear as day.

Even assuming this is the case ... 

Games don't make themselves overnight. 

Game development for a 2017 launch would have to start ... like *now*. 

If we're factoring in a system that has greater processing power than a Wii U, games could very well require almost 3 years of development time. 

Not sure why some people want the Wii U to stay on the market. In it's lifetime so far it has sold less than the Dreamcast did in around it's 18 months. It barely has any games coming up, no third party support and will just keep hurting the Nintendo brand. Dump it now, fans will be pissed, however, they are pissed now, might as well just tell us what the NX is now.

No they will not realease it in 2016, the eariliest they will is the 2017 holiday season.

Here are two points to consider:

1 - Nintendo has a set cycle for home console releases that they have never deviated from and one "bad" E3 will not not change it. The cycle is about 18-months long and starts when they demo the concept for the console, though either E3 or a Nintendo Direct, goes through a "launch party" the next year either at an E3 or with a Nintendo Direct, and ends wen they release it. Since Nintendo has only said this console exists the cycle hasn't started. There needs to be either a direct or a game show. Here is the new console and this is what we want to do with it. Currently we don't know for certain what the NX is and Nintendo has been careful not say what it is. This cycle is to make sure there is enough development time for Nintendo to get game read for the launch window.

2 - Nintendo is making money right now. And in the past it didn't matter to them how far behind they where in the game, the gap between the Gamecube and PS2 that pales what is currently happening today. So why would they drop a console that is making money to push an uncertain product out that door that will more then likely put them in the red and further lower customer opinion even further since dropping a product for a new one actually does damage the brand, see Sega's march of console in its last few years of it's life as a console maker. It doesn't make sense to do it.

If anything this may spur a price cut this holiday season which we have not seen yet.

The NX what ever it is will not see the light of day until 2017 at least.

They need to release it same year with ps5 and new xbox, otherwhise it will last a half generation at longest.
