It won't. Handheld version next year, console version 2017. People keep forgetting that Nintendo said they wont show 2016 Wii U games this E3.

They said that they would show early 2016 WiiU games, but they didn't. The only new WiiU games they announced are both 2015! Maybe Mario Tennis gets delayed? I don't know anymore..

since when does nintendo care how long a homeconsole is on the market when they release a handheld?

This. Good lord, I'm just not even going to read any of the other Nintendo-related threads right now. So much ill-informed hyperbole right now.

Yeah, because there aren't any. That's the point.

Early 2016 probably means the last quarter of the 2015 fiscal year, or up until March 2016. If this year and last year proved anything, Nintendo could have a very sparse first half of 2016 and a compacted second half (including Zelda U.) They'll announce NX handheld and console for releases late 2016 and mid -> late 2017 respectively, and work on releasing a final wave of Wii U games to show that they support their platforms (one of the things that killed Wii U is that the Wii had a two year drought with literally five or so games before it was released.)

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem was announced for 2016, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of their five or six games releasing this Fall/Winter is delayed (hopefully not Xenoblade X.) Furthermore, Nintendo could always have a direct some time this year announcing games. They've done it before. E3 the last few years has been quite a small event for announcements, and it is quite interesting that the other manufacturers had huge bombshells considering how it has been the last few years.

Also did they say specifically that they will announce 2016 Wii U games or did they say they will announce 2016 games with no preceding adjective? Because they did announce quite a few 3DS games for 2016.

That might be true or might not. You have no substantiation for it as it is.

I hate it that the Wii U is doing so badly. To date, it still gets more play than my other 8th gen consoles but I'm not oblivious to reality. The thing is a cancer to Nintendo. They need to scrap it sooner rather than later and start over. I used to hope and believe that, once some major games hit, the console would be a success but Nintendo has refused to make those games (Animal Crossing, Pokemon RPG, 3D Mario, Zelda, etc.).

End its short, tragic life.

If it does release next year, does that mean Nintendo will have a Live Stage Conference? =o

All I hear now after Nintendo's lackluster E3 presentation is that they've shifted all their resources on to NX and all the big games are coming out on NX as early as next year.

Alternatively, if Nintendo is releasing NX in 2017, they need to support Wii U with some big games for 2016. But everything looks so barren right now for 2015 and next year that one can only assume Nintendo is shifting away to the NX early this cycle.

Its likely they shifted much of their resources from Wii U but games take time to develop. 2016 looking quite barron for Wii U doesn't mean 2016 is also the launch year for NX, 2017 is still likeliest release for their next  home system.

Just like the Wii, I think Wii U will have a completely terrible year leading up to NX. 2016 for Wii U will not be that empty

Pokken, Fire Emblem, Zelda with filler in between like Project Guard and Treasure etc

SNES 1990, PS1 1994, PS2 2000, PS3 2006
4 years is a normal console circle still

mid 2016 I think NX will be out and Wii U support will be dropped by nintendo, same with 3DS.
