Aside from the Virtual Boy, Nintendo never had a massive failure like the U (even the GC sold 2x more)

It not going to be 2X by the end of the Wii U life, though it will not sell as many. But the gap between 1st and Nintendo's console is going to be different(smaller, I'm guessing the PS4 will "only" sell betwen 110m and 100m, and 130m was the gap between the PS2 and Gamecube.)

How much of a failure a console is depends on how you look it. There are many ways to spin things to fit your view. By looking at it from a profit prospective the only failure Nintendo had was the Virtual Boy, the Wii U is making money the company is making money. The gamecube was a "massive" failure and the Xbox even more so if you only look at units sold and the gap between them and first, but to the companies involved the consoles were sucesses that could be built upon or else there wouldn't have been Xbox 360 and the Wii would have been something completly different. The gamecube for only selling 24m consoles had the same profits as Sony had for the PS2 and in some year even more so.

But back to the main point, I will reiterate what I said in my orginal post.

Nitnendo isn't a company that replaces something if it looks like it is failing. They still have some tricks up their sleves that can make both the handheld and the home console, namely price cuts which will be used before they think of replacment. They have a certain development cycle they use for home consoles that they never devaited from, and for it to release at the end of next year, they whould have to be showing the NX off now to its partners, and that is usually where the leaks come out. But that isn't happening.

We don't even know what the NX is, and with out that information all guesses as to when it is coming are are irrealavant. Most the guesses are based on a rumor that is over a year old, and Nintendo does go through a lot of design changes in one year. Using the trasition between the Gamecube and Wii one of the orginal rumors about the Wii was the "Star Road" rumor where the controller was suspose to be this big star sharped controller with one button. While the controller did exist, it wasn't slated for the Wii but the Gamecube when they started messing with motion controls. So that point here is they may have been thinking of a "fusion" concept but that may have changed. And any mention or non-mention of it is just circumstansial at best.

My next point ties into my first point. Is the release cycle they use for home console is to make sure they can get software read for the launch. And to "force" out software costs money sure you can retrofit software like LoZ to work on next console, but it still takes time, resources and money to do so. And they just claimed out of the hole I doubt they want go back into it so soon.

And finally here is my prediction, Nintendo was caught by being unprepared for HD developer, to be fair Sony and Microsoft had the same problems it just they had a better relationship eith third party developers to help cover them. So they are going to start development for the NX soon probally as developers finishes up on the projects they are currently one they are one. Nintendo will probally cover up some of the loss by releasing easy to make "budget" game like captain toad to keep support, and profits, up for the Wii U. So we are going to get a major leak early next year as to what the NX is from one of Nintendo's development partners because that is where the leaks usually happen. (AMD has been unually quiet and we usually here then talking about the "project" first, though no real information comes from them.) And Nintendo will probally have a direct eariler then they want to about the concept of the NX. So E3 next year will probally disappoint yet again, since they love talking about their concepts at E3, and that will either leave a hold or they will show a little more but not enough to wow. If the NX is handheld it will probally be earily 2017 if it is a console it will be late November/December 2017.

And sorry the post go a lot longer then I itended it to.

Assuming NX is a hybrid, then it releasing in 2016 would confirm a Twilight Princess scenario with Zelda U, and Paper Mario, Metroid, Animal Crossing, etc. not getting new installments on Wii U. That'd probably anger people into not buying NX immediately, causing poor sales, which cause them to never buy it in fear of the Wii U situation all over again.

In this age where we buy a new smart phone every year, maybe it's not that bad for a console to have a shorter life span. I dunno...

They have showed us this E3 how much they care about their platforms releasing spinoffs and low budget games. It's pretty clear they are doing something new.

It's not like Nintendo will say: Oh, look, we have to wait to 2017 to release a new console because the 5 year cycle nobody believes. Let's keep filling them with DLC and spinoffs until release!

If it comes earlier than fall 2017 (assuming it's the next big console and not a "third-tier"), I'll buy a hat, wear it enough so that I can accurately refer to it as "my hat," and eat it.

If they don't show or tease new titles for WiiU at Gamescom or TGS this year - I think we can very safely assume NX comes out early-mid 2017. If they release outside of the holiday, they're sure to beat X1 and PS4. Then use that momentum to come into holiday 2017 guns blazing.

Nintendo seldom goes to either one. With Gamescom they will have the same demos they have at E3. Because they are focusing on the games that will launch in the next 6 months. It would be better to say if they don't have a ND sometime in the fall and Early winter that doesn't hint at new games it still wouldn't mean much because before E3 all we knew about the holiday season was two maybe 3 games, and now there are 13 non-eshop games slated for the Wii U in a four month period, personally I think they should spread them out more. (2 games a month for six months would bring us to the end of the business year 2015)

And if they start to make titles for the NX now I doubt they will have enough titles to come out "guns blazing".
