Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Xbox - Oculus Partnership seems like nothing but PR stunt.

I never said a word about innovation. The gist of my point was when Sony does something Microsoft isnt far behind with a response. If I was running Microsoft I would've ignored Morpheus until it yeilded results (which I doubt it will on a large scale). MS has the hololens and even the boss admitted it was too far ahead of its time, but lets just partner with oculus because...you know.

When you said, "Sony makes hardware so making new tech comes naturally to them." To me that implies they're innovative, something they rarely are.

You're lacking common sense at the moment. If MS gets involved with VR tech after Morpheus does well, they will be late to the party. Especilly if its just a fad.

Sony has flatout stole ideas from its competitors because... you know. So lets just move on maybe.

I really don't care about VR, but will be looking forward to Sony's Monday presentation.
They have a great opportunity to blow Oculus away if they manage to make a decent VR presentation, featuring true VR instead of this "picture in picture" silliness.
And while being significantly ahead of XBox in these past 18 months, they have another chance to make XBox look like an inferior console choice.

MS should have stuck with just providing controllers, that would have made a huge impact, but instead they managed to lose E3 even before it started.

Perhaps MS are backing Oculus because they are already late to the party? Sony's been working on VR for a number of years now, it's not like they have rushed it to market. They already had a streaming/movie headset that you could buy (though at a stupidly high price) for a number of years.

I dont think MS were convinced by VR when Oculus was just Oculus doing VR... then Sony start showing their device coming along and now Valve get involved, so now they look late to the party and with Steam being a major PC competitor they had to jump in. Rather than spend big on R&D and all the work that entails, backing Oculus (now it's supported by the cash of facebook) is a sensible move, but to me they are already late to the party.

Time will tell if they are prepared to put proper resources into this or its just a weak link of support (let's be honest here, streaming a game to a VR headset is not the point of VR).

Microsoft has always been behind Sony when it comes to tech. Sony makes hardware so making new tech comes naturally to them.Microsoft tends to look at what Sony does and buy things to try and cut them off and say "hey we have this too". They did it with the Kinect as well.

There is a lot of nonsense in such a small post. Sony and MS both have taken ideas from each other. Sony has also flatout copied ideas from Nintendo as well.

Sony has a history of, "hey we have this too."

The Morpheus is just a response to the Oculus Rift, lets not pretend Sony was the first company that made the push to VR.

I never said a word about innovation. The gist of my point was when Sony does something Microsoft isnt far behind with a response. I also have to say your point of view is narrow.  Both MS and Sony compete in the console space and each have taken the best things from each other which is just smart business.  While each company has taken ideals and products from each other both have done it their own way.  Kinect as a device goes way beyond what the Eyetoy tries to do or accomplish.  It's also evident that MS has been working on the tech far longer than Sony has worked on the Eyetoy.  Hololens is definitely not a response to Sony VR effort.  Both technolgies are totally different and reach a different type of audience and experience.  Say MS copied Sony in this respect really is looking at the situations in the wrong way.

Also the PC requirements are insane for this, most people even gamers dont own 1500$+ pcs, ontop of the VR headset, and the extra controllers needed that are sold seperately.

Yeah they should be cheap as chips on the specs so we never ever have to upgrade ever again, nor would we ever need to.

Also Morpheus is supposed to be cheaper (vr headset) than the O Rift. That ll just hook up to your consol.

Rift confirmed for being dead before Morph even existed.

I think sonys chance of winning / leading the VR market space is almost a done deal at this point.

Leading=Dominating, so really it's just gonna be Morph by the sounds of it right?.

If your developeing a VR game, you would want to make sure its also going to come out on the PS4.

Don't you mean only on PS4?, why bother making for anyone else if the specs are so high/cost right?, hell everyone else is now automatically second rate/ might get a port at this point.

The fact you believe MS lost E3 from showing a small implementation of a partnership probably speaks volumns on your way of thinking then anything else.  OR is PC driven and Morp is PS4 driven.  The markets really are not the same nor are the players.  If you would have mentioned Vive and OR that would be different.  You do know a lot of partnerships probably goes beyound the console war and have implementations in other industires and technology.  Virtual rooms with multiple displays which an be added probably with mutiple information could be very interesting to see develop.

Dunno about this back and forth between OR & Morph, but I hope home VR succeeds in some form. My gut feeling is Morpheus will do about as well as one can expect for an expensive console peripheral, and OC will be used mostly for porn and as another 'PC is superior' bullet point (while 'real gamers' will prefer regular monitors for optimal visuals and input latency or whatever).

Switching to the offensive, huh?

MS is responding to the all VR hype with the oculus deal. It's a easy and fast way to jump on the VR bandwagon. Hololens is AR and it's not a good counter to VR by itself. It's something that makes the xbox one stand out amoungst it's competitors though. It's has interesting potential but not as much potential as full VR tech.

I think the thing is, unless we get to see XBO games running directly in the Occulus (and not the streaming stuff they showed)... then I think all speculation that this will be a sony killer etc is just a mute point.

At the moment it is a PR stunt, it hasn't really given them that much except being mentioned + controller sales. The minute I see Forza running in an oculus with the oculus running directly off the XBO, then I will change my mind and say that it's a fantastic move from MS.

I think once again that people are thinking in to small terms. What is there to prevent Oculus from working directly with an X1 in a years time? Both Oculus and X1 will function on the W10 platform. And of course it was a PR stunt, they are a commercial company :).

Exactly this. Idk, I saw the presentation and thought it was a cool little feature. But the partnership is about much more than the Xbox One and a virtual room.
