Forums - Gaming - The Xbox - Oculus Partnership seems like nothing but PR stunt.

All I said was rather than jump the gun on VR tech, why not wait and see the yield of what the other person does. The only thing worth copying (if it has to be done) is the sure thing. Sony tends to take more risk than Microsoft, but what Microsoft made that they copied was a sure thing nevertheless. Motion gaming is fleeting, but online is going to be around for a good long while. Sony as a business is known for making hardware so they will be doing these things quite naturally and with ease. Microsoft doesnt have to meet them halfway everytime. We're still some time away from VR being the in thing.

I am trying to talk about the rational thing to do, not the most cut throat.

Why do you believe this partnership is MS jumping the gun on VR.  If anything its the opposite since MS can continue to do what they do without creating a device.  MS is going the AR route and for good reason.  It has a much wider application for other industries then VR.  Its smart business for MS to support OR since they want VR to be used with their OS.  The X1 implementation is probably not the biggest goal for MS right now but instead getting Win 10, and VR working tightly together so that Windows is the platform for VR devices.

The ideal that Sony takes more risk I have to disagree.  If anything Sony would be the last company I would say is a risk taker.  They sat on their motion tech until Nintendo showed them it was viable.  When I think about it, could you shed some light on exactly Sony has done in the console space that was risky before another company did it first.  The only thing I can think of is add a DVD player to the PS1 but even then that was not risky, it fueld their tech as well.

Microsoft's Hololens is ahead of the game. Even they know theres no point to trying to force that type of tech down peoples throats too soon (especially when you figure in the costs to purchase said equipment). This is why I like Phil Spencer. He's not perfect, but he's rational and knows when to buckle down and accept reality. Look at Sony when they came out with the 4k TV. Too soon and it demanded too much money from most consumers.

Sony did not sit on their motion tech until Nintendo showed them that it was viable. Sony has been invested in video camera gaming for fifteen years now.

Microsoft is not known for taking risk unless it is profitable hence why they force bundled the kinect. They dont really like risk. Sony continued to make iterations of the eyetoy regardless of despite not having large scale sales and yes their second iteration of the eyetoy rode off of the success of the wii (coupled with the move). The same thing went for their games last gen when they were constantly questioned by the media for not taking risk in making games like Sony in the latter half of the gen with game development (Especially seeing that Sony created more new IPs than Nintendo and Microsoft by 2011 of last gen).Sony even admitted that they cant take the type of risk making games that they did last gen, which is why they have fewer AAA games in development. A lot of studios took a hit last gen.

Sony made a surround sound headset...Microsoft made a headset. Sony put DVD on the PS2, Microsoft did it and Nintendo ignored it. Sony came out with Blu Ray...Microsoft said "oops we were late" and adopted HD-DVD ad ons. Sony and Nintendo came out with their motion tech and so did Microsoft with the same tech Sony turned down. Microsoft invests in vr but goes way ahead with the hololens, so they make a deal once they realize Morpheus is being made by Sony. There is always a reaction.

Sony doesn't take risk? Name a console that Sony has that they didnt take a loss on to make multimedia more affordable to the masses. Most people would not have been able to afford DVD's nor Blue Rays without the PS2 (with the Xbox behind them) and the PS3.

In the end I really think Microsoft is doing well right now. I just think they should focus on the games and wait and workout the deal with oculus if all goes well for Sony. Sony will always come out with new hardware becuse thats how they are. They are known for taking risk. The reason why this is the perfect time to take risk with games is because Where Sony has a shortage of large scale games Microsoft can offer something they cannot financially provide.

honestly the whole xbox -  oculus partner ship seems like nothing but a big PR move. to get people talking about xbox one and oculus, as if there was anything substantial in the announcement or things they showed. it seems like an announcement to graner reactions like this from news sites, or this from the consumers.

at the end of the day, it seems as its just nothing but a stunt to get some headlines assossiating VR with the xbox one, to likely hide the fact that the Xbox One will most likely never get VR in its life time, and the Playstation 4 will get it next year. a poor attempt to get on the VR hype bandwagon because they have nothing to show, while Sony is going in full force.

im not talking about the controller/oculus partnership, thats more of a logical business decision. im talking about the streaming nonesense they showed. and yes i know they said this is just the start of the partnership, but that also helps my point, more PR and nothing to back it off.

I agree with you 100%. It's so obvious and anyone with a pair of eyes can see it.

On the most basic level it's not logistically even close to viable. So I have to have a $1,000+ pc, a $400-500 Oculus (guess at the price), and a X-1 ($300-350). This means only a tiny narrow market of people will have all three and actually ever use this feature. A feature which has questionable value in the first place.

But this kind of strategy has been being used in the industry for a long time and is smart for Microsoft as a business (Sony uses the same straegy by the way). In this case it seem pretty clear this announcement is less about providing something of value to consumers and more about taking away value from the competitors products. It's the same model that leads to timed exclusive deals, a large amount of PR/Marketing statments, and me too products like the Move (which was clearly designed to piggyback on-disrupt the wii market for example).

Dirty business!

Come now, can we keep in context.  I believe we are talking about real games at 1080P not some limited demos.

No, we're talking about VR. Limited demos is all you're ever gonna get, whether a company calls it a full game or not.

Sony always took the ideas and made it better like with trophies. And most of the stuff MS and Nintendo inveted was copied from some other companies as well. And the pic has many things wrong

- how the hell is sony copying the xbox 360 controller? both have a complete different form. The ps4 buttons didnt changed. In fact they improved both flaws of the ps3 and 360 controller, like having an even surface on the button and digipad layout. No one did that before.

- ps2 had always a slot for upgrading a harddrive and lan connection, before xbox was even released.

- remote play was even on the ps3 possible with the psp before the wiiu was out.

- the ps2 had online before the xbox.

First of all, I'm fine with taking ideas and making them better. However some Sony fans hail them as innovators when they rarely are.

Actually, I don't think trophies are better. I think earning platinums only appeals to a tiny percentage of players and they make non-platinum trophies feel worthless. But that's my opinion.

OG Xbox was the first to truly utilize a HDD for something more than a couple games and even included it with the console. Later model PS2's removed hard drive support because it was so useless.

Its not the online support they are referring to, PSN was created as a response to XBL.

A few things there are debateable. But there are also things you gotta admit Sony copied.

I never said a word about innovation. The gist of my point was when Sony does something Microsoft isnt far behind with a response. If I was running Microsoft I would've ignored Morpheus until it yeilded results (which I doubt it will on a large scale). MS has the hololens and even the boss admitted it was too far ahead of its time, but lets just partner with oculus because...you know.

When you said, "Sony makes hardware so making new tech comes naturally to them." To me that implies they're innovative, something they rarely are.

You're lacking common sense at the moment. If MS gets involved with VR tech after Morpheus does well, they will be late to the party. Especilly if its just a fad.

Sony has flatout stole ideas from its competitors because... you know. So lets just move on maybe.

Switching to the offensive, huh?

MS is responding to the all VR hype with the oculus deal. It's a easy and fast way to jump on the VR bandwagon. Hololens is AR and it's not a good counter to VR by itself. It's something that makes the xbox one stand out amoungst it's competitors though. It's has interesting potential but not as much potential as full VR tech.

Offensive mode? No. I'm using common sense, if they're gonna push VR tech they gotta do it the same time as their competitors. Especially if it turns out to be a big hit. Not wait and see what happens then play catch up.

Hololens is something completely different, its not being pushed as core gaming hardware.

And bravo! It worked.... and you're helping.

That's nice and all but ps4 gets it first and if it takes off ps4 will be helped even more! So exciting!

I agree with the non-bolded part.
