Forums - Gaming - Has 'Gaming' got better or worse since 2006-2008 era?

Completely agree. Made it an even bigger achievement when Journey surpassed those games in the same style though.

Oh come on, Journey the 2 hour walking sim can't possibly surpass anything. Yes the co-op was interesting idea but that about it.

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

I disagree, Journey was rather incredible. I'm not saying it's the best game of all time, but I consider it a game in the vein of SotC and Ico, and I think Journey surpassed those.

Unbiasedly its a lot better, respectively I think it has stopped evolving and thus feels worse. Many of my favourite franchises were present in 2006-2008 and have yet to be released on the new generation, so for me its not as good but the variety of experiences available on PS4 in 2015 is superior to what was available on PS3 in the period of time.

2006-2008 was filled with lots of new things which have sinced been improved upon like FPS, Open world games, western RPGS, the cinematic AAA blockbuster, online multiplayer on consoles, indie games etc.

For those who say its worse I'm genuinely intridgued as to why? My only support of this notion is that we had a lot of new IPs so things were more exciting.

For me, I do think it got slightly worse from back then. I'm sure the gaming industry has changed, but I'm sure I have changed too; everyone does. I play less than I used to do 10 years ago, and while I do think the industry is very rotten, I do try to see things on a positive light and try to enjoy gaming.

Both.

Better. Dota 2 is the greatest game of all time, Fifa continually improves. CS:GO released
Worse. CoD is not as fun anymore. Either the games are poorly made, or I have grown out of being addicted to it. Just can't care enough about it to get good and do the competitive scene that I used to do in CoD4-BO2.

Other games are lame/not competitive/idc about

It's getting worse, thanks to western companies. They caused a crash before, and they're really trying to cause another one.

The former glorified Japanese studios, besides a few exceptions... Have changed for worse as well.

I blame western studios/publisher AND the rise of mobile, for the decline in quality and ethical standards in the industry.

And game quality wise... Not much is new, since the leap between 6th and 7th Gen was bigger than the current one.
"New" ways to play have failed to make an impact, AAA games are declining in quality besides some notable exceptions.

I guess it'll improve after the seventh Gen consoles shut down completely, and game quality will rise with the experience devs will get while working with the new consoles.

I don't expect anything close to Mario Galaxy in the near future though.

I should have been jaded in 2006 after gaming since 1980.
There is less variety, the last great mid tier game I played was Majin and the forsaken kingdom, 5 years ago. Indies have picked up the slack somewhat yet are either short or procedurally generated experiences.

Day 1 patches are standard now, pretty much all games release incomplete, load times seem to be getting worse and gameplay is not keeping pace with the improvement of graphics. Games look better, yet the gameplay is the same or worse which makes the quality difference stand out more and more.
Plus I don't like the trend to make everything a variation of the same openworld basic busy work gameplay.

I dunno why particular 2006-2008 but let's check the highlights:  Okami, Dreamfall the longest journey, Super paper mario, Super mario galaxy, Portal, Valkyria chronicles, Wipeout HD, Little big planet, Oblivion, Viva Pinata, Loco roco, Dead rising, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Zack and Wiki, Motorstorm, Fallout 3, Dead space, Mirrors edge. No sequels in there (Dreamfall, Oblivion and Fallout 3 excepted, yet they felt like new games)

Since then we had the excellent Dark souls, Ni No Kuni, The last of us, Rayman Origins, Portal 2, Deus Ex HR, Journey, The walking dead, Fez, Anti chamber in 2011-2013, good fun but less.

The only games that really stuck with me last year were Transistor and Fract OSC. The rest was competent. Driveclub turned out to be excellent yet not really a poster child for a competent release...

There are a lot of competent sequels and great remasters, but originality is lacking and gameplay is stuck in neutral.

A lot of ideas in the 7th gen were done in the past but were just done better. Gameplay mechanics are moving foward I just think its diminishing returns. You want fresh ideas and no idea what you really want.

Some of the games you mentioned were creative in presentation, but at their core didnt do much unique for gameplay.

Id like to see a little more creative and unique games. But gameplay for some genres is just fine. So maybe this question depends on what genres you most enjoy.

I do know what I want. I want to be able to talk to npcs instead of choosing from a few dialog options. Be able to ask for directions and advice without having to use a minimap or menu screen. Not be put in a straightjacket when it comes to completing objectives. AI that can adapt to my play style, both in generated dialog and gameplay.
For racing, Isle of Man track is at the top of my list, followed by endurance races with 200 cars on the track.
A complete god game expanding on the powers of from dust.
Gambit system from FF12 and programmable abilities like in Transistor applied to a massive scale RTS game.
More creativity in locations, art styles and escpecially different cultures.
And the last guardian to finally get finished (or actually made...)

I have to say worse unfortunately. I know the 8th gen isn't over, and as always, there will be great gems, but I do fear we as gamers will seldom obtain such creativity as we did during the era of the 3rd to 7th generation.

First of all, I want to point something out in your last post. Numerous games you mentioned as new IPs were not or used ideas from past games. Paper Mario started in 2000, Mario Galaxy was a successor Mario 64 and Sunshine, Wipeout HD is a sequel, Oblivion is obviously just a significantly more polished successor to Morrowind, Motorstorm is basically a Midway arcade racer with nice graphics, Fallout 3 at its core is Oblivion with guns and ideas from past Fallout games, Dead Space is basically RE4 in space, Mirror's Edge was a unique game but not great. Hence, you're boasting about too many sequels or games inspired by their predcessors.

Talk to NPCs instead of choosing dialog options? So we would just have an AI to chat with? Quite honestly, that sounds like a waste of time for the average gamer. I feel that request has less to do with actual gameplay and more to do with story telling.

I'm not saying your ideas are bad, I just don't think there is mass appeal for them. The games you boasted about have mass appeal.

I've never owned so many games with a console a year and a half in, so I'd say better. I really like the games put out nowadays, I haven't been disappointed so far.
