So, you hate kids and swimsuits, while loving meathead tomboys?!
I only dislike two things in JRPGs, lack of voice acting options and missable quests and items.

My favorite genre is JRPG's (or RPG in general for that matter) and love pretty much everything about them, ESPECIALLY random encounters, BUT i do agree with two of your points
No1: I absolutely hate that, something that derives a little from that is that there are some instances when you have to go through lots of dialogue/choices and, specifically for me one time power went out almost at the end of one, it was a long time ago and it has never happened to me again but i've hated those long periods of dialogue ever since, not anything against them per se though. Now, it also happens when there are instances where you have multiple hard/story battles in sucesion w/o the ability to save in between them and if you for some random reason loose the last one (or well, whichever) is back to square one.
No8: I HATE THIS, there are games where they give you subtle hints that you might need to do something (STILL NOT ENOUGH!) but then there are other where you basically have to guess or stumble upon such events by mere luck, i hate that, specially if its something important story or (characters)back-story related.
Now i would like to add something to that list: ONE HIT KO attacks, the person who decided it was a good idea to put OHKO attacks on RPG's (that mmm for some reason always seem to be paiered with the problem No1
to your delight [NO] ) should be put in the gillotine (doesn't matter if it's already dead) along with those who consintently keep making the games w/o getting rid of this, or worse, adding it to their games. OHKO's are something that's 1 - Unnecesary: obviously, 2 - Time wasting: (Oh no! it's actually great when you can get rid of enemies and grind really quick :D) When the enemy goes first, targets you and one shot's you and all the two hours you went on leveling w/o saving are lost and you want to break the disc in half! (Digital is the future :O) - BTW thats totally not based on personal experiences, and totally not referring to Hamaon, but yeah, that's about it.
I love JRPG's but besides what i said and the cliche ''Perfect Girl'' and ''Useless girl who everyone for some reason wants to protect'' characters (sometimes one and the same, some unusual times more than one of each), i wouldn't change anything about them.

You are doing yourself a favor! It usually takes 150 hours to do a 100% on a Tales of game (even with the damn guide) so it's not worth it most of the time. You really have to be a Tales of Crazy Fanboy like me to even try that shit.
"I've Underestimated the Horse Power from Mario Kart 8, I'll Never Doubt the WiiU's Engine Again"
JRPGs usually taking super long to get going. They have horrible pacing more often than not.
For me:
1. The 1000 different hair colours. Like, ok I get it. They don't all have to look like the average Japanese person, but after looking at a cover with a girl with pink hair, another with blue, another with purple, etc, I just want to avoid the game like the plague. (having said that I'm strangely a huge Sailor Moon fan). I loved Persona 4 Golden where only one girl had weird hair (blue) but even that was kind of dark, so it was ok.
2. Sexualizing teenage girls/children. It makes me extremely uncomfortable.
3. Guys acting like complete idiots around girls. Girls acting like complete idiots around guys (I'm looking at you, Persona 4).
I get it, but when all their interactions with them consist of guys acting like pervs or girls smothering you, it gets annoying as hell. They seriously act like two people of the opposite sex cannot be friends with each other.
4. Girls punching and throwing things at guys as joke and then realizing they were in the wrong (I hate double standards). I wish a guy would punch them back and just laugh about it.
Edit: just realized that these things also appy to anime. Also that I mentioned nothing that has to do with gameplay. In terms of gameplay, I honestly have no complaints (i.e. they're not limited to JRPGs)

Pacing. I remember back in the PS1 era a lot of my favorite RPGs were only like 30-40 hours long. Lengthy enough to get your money's worth but not so long that it becomes a drag to play. Then in the PS2 era every JRPG started stretching out their length as much as possible. 60 hour games, 80 hour games, 100 hour games, you had to take a 6 month vacation from work just to finish a damn game. Between neverending cutscenes, ton and tons of filler content, and MMO-like design decisions, it became clear that Japanese developers had lost their way with me. That was pretty much when I switched from JRPGs to WRPGs as my go to genre.
Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

I don't understand why side quests can be missable unless they were a secret, But even then, I dislike it because it almost feels the game was designed to be played with a guide.

JRPG is one of my favorite genres, but I can admit that there are aspects and design choices that often annoy me to no end. I'm here to list some of my grievances and encourage you all to list and explain your own as well! **This thread is mainly for those who like JRPGs, but have issues with some fo the conventions. If you don't like JRPGs, this thread is not for you, so please don't bash, just for the sake of bashing. Here we go: 1) Save spots- When JRPGs have points where you have to go for a long period of time without saving your game. I understand the need to not save in certain locations, but when you go into a long dungeon with cheap random encounters that can one shot you, there goes all that time, wasted. 2) Random encounters- I might have played too many newer types of JRPGs, but when I went back to play FFX, the random encounters sometimes drove me insane, especially in areas such as the Calm Lands. This annoyance is heightened now more than ever to me. 4) Spilting up the party- When you've reached a certain point in a JRPG and the game decides it's time to split up the party. Removing one, or a bunch of characters. I understand how it can hold plot significance, but to me it breaks up the flow of the game. Especially if you have good equipment attached to them, or you lose your main healer. |
I agree with 1 and 2. 4 to an extent. So long as every character is fun and easy to use I don't mind the party being split up. Which brings me another point.
Level differences - Why does there have to be differences in levels, and then the party gets split up? Or perhaps like in Final Fantasy 6 when you have to split your party up into 3 different groups, but 75% of your party is at level 20.
Pacing- Another one. Goes without saying.

Well not in real life, but as far as JRPGs go: Chie is best girl.
Also the SMTxFE pic is supposed to represent all the characters that are just there as fap material.
| pokoko said: Towns -- I'm over towns. I'm tired of towns. They seemed interesting once but I wouldn't mind if I never saw them again outside of the base. Oh, I have to run around and make sure I talk to everyone? Alright. Now I have to come back and talk to all of them again periodically just to be sure because sometimes one of them will have a quest I might miss? Yay. All the shops are split up so I have to run back and forth between them and deal with loading screens? Awesome. Been there and done that. Now I want a hub. The most recent game to piss me off with the whole separate towns thing was Dragon Age: Origins, where I had to go to different cities to get different gear while dealing with random encounters in between. Such a complete and total waste of my time. |
Doesn't that mean that you have a problem with RPGS (that do that) and not JRPGS?
