If you can't explore the World, if your only equipment options are a weapon and "accessories" (IE: Lazy devs don't want to make new armor in a game), if you are forced through over 90% of the game to have certain party members, and if your story is nonsense you are a shit jrpg. Any game that has 3 of the 4 of the above qualify.

I assume you didn't like Final Fantasy XIII then

Greatest jrpg ever! In reality though, it was complete shit!

I have no problems with the mechanics of JRPGs, I love:

Random Encounters
Turn-based combat
Side quests
Etc.

What I don't like are the "anime-isms". The spiky haired teens, the overly bubbly school girls, the brooding "angsty for no reason" male leads, the poor voice (over)acting, and leaving everything to the power of friendship, or other such shallow concepts and ideals.

Annoying characters are one of my primary complaints. Almost every jrpg out there has extremely annoying characters. Even the good jrpg's suffer from this (teddy persona 4, Riki xenoblade, etc). This is probably a matter of cultural differences in humor, but there are always tons of characters that I just find annoying as hell in jrpg's.

Well almost every JRPG won't let you explore the world besides a couple of exceptions, probably shouldn't be playing JRPGs for that. Exploring the world is more of a WRPG thing

Those last 2 things are very very very common in JRPGs, RPGs in general. Games in general XD

You can do these things in great jrpgs, like Suikoden, Xenogears and Blade, and early FF titles. And the certain party members refer to the entire party being forced on the player. Not 1 or 2 forced party members. I guess I should have clarified, but a lot of jrpgs that I know of don't force your entire party on you.

I don't count world maps as really exploring the world. It's just an illusion that it gives off. Anyway, yeah, forced parties can be pretty annoying.

I just remembered something I hate, I've only experienced this once but: Seeing all the characters on the box art but only being able to play as half of them XD

I hate the jar jar binks of jrpg's too.

Yeah the general consensus I'm seeing is pacing overall, which is something I wholeheartedly agree with. Some go on for too long and just add some ridiculous amounts of storyline padding (not sidequests). By the end of some JRPGs, I just want them to end.

Another thing I remembered I don't like about JRPGs is the overall cliche in story. The whole save the world, political intrigue, and religion themes start to drive me up the wall as well. Tales of is notorious for this I've seen.

Stereotypes in JRPGs are another annoyance. Damsels in distress, cookie cutter protagonists (Asbel Launt), etc.

Lastly, I forgot to mention sidequests. Some of these JRPGs have some of the most asinine side quests. ie) Picking up monkeys and pairing them with their soul mate based on their name -_-. It would be somewhat bearable if the gave a decent reward, but they usually never do.

Fixed camera is another SLIGHT... annoyance. I can deal with it overall though

I agree with you with number 2, 5, and 6. Apart from that, some of the most annoying things for me in this genre is the over-use of overly generic and sometimes ugly anime art-styles, the fact that sometimes you have female sex toys as party members, and the "fake" big damage number (you know the ones, the "OMG, this attack does 99999999999 damage!") attacks, slow and boring combat systems, and most of all, I hate LUCK, most JRPGs I've played are built around LUCK rather than skill and strategy, and I fucking hate that.

I'm now filled with determination.

I do when these world maps lead to dungeons for great armor (yep, actual armor in a game), towns that are inhabited by strange people that don't really need to do more than make the world you explore feel more alive, I love those things about jrpgs.

Some things get lost in the translation, so the dialogue can be incredibly stupid sometimes.

Wright brought up a good point. When you have to watch a long unskipable cutscene and then thrown into a tough boss fight.

This actually brought up another thing I personally hate. When you have to fight one boss, and then BOOM, the game decides to throw you another boss without saving in between.
