Forums - Nintendo - Jim Sterling talks about Nintendo's abysmal handling of Amiibos

Hahaha, funny really. Any of you doubters that Nintendo is making a conscious decision to limit specific Amiibo are just not getting it. You just are not understanding what Amiibo is. Amiibo is trading cards, not software. Software you want to sell a shit load of, millions and millions of them. Amiibo is trading cards because you can find a mana card like you can find a Mario amiibo, but to get all the rare foil cards, you have to continue to go to walmart and buy booster cards(A chance to buy a rare amiibo).

You don't think Nintendo is doing it on purpose, they are...they are. And it's for the best. Certainly scalpers will get there hands on it first, but tell me, who is really upset that an issue number 1 of the Amazing Spiderman is selling for $5000? Does it suck, yes, but is it the norm, you bet your butt it is. So Jim is no longer buying amiibos, yeah right. He's like a wrestling fan, wrestling sucks now, the product is stale, but best believe they tune in every so often to watch the boring piece of shitzu. Sure, it's the first year Amiibo are out and people a bitching they can't find their favorite character, but next year a Marth Amiibo is going to be Jace, the Mind sculptor. http://www.cardkingdom.com/catalog/item/129937?gclid=CO6ojejE8MUCFQaTaQodm4cApw

Everyone falls out of love with yu-gi-oh, Magic, Pokem TCG, Kaijudo, etc, those are the bandwagoners. There are bandwagoners in everything. Amiibo is a wagon everyone is hopping on to at the moment, but the reason why it will be successful in the next 5 years is because it is trading cards. It's a platform that survives by being rare. Get over it. If you want a Marth, fork over the extra dough. If you want a Mercedes, fork over the extra dough. That's life.

I never saw it that way. You may be right. But then:

Activision sold 175 million Skylanders in 2½ years making their average production volume more than 6 millions a month.
Nintendo sold +10,5 million amiibos since november 2014 making their average production volume less than 2 millions a month.

Hmmm, that is indeed interesting. Nintendo really needs to step up production, seems like demand far exceeds supply so far.

If Activision could do this, Nintendo should be able to do better. Amiibo cut across many games, after all.

This.  Why are so many people on here content to ignore this simple fact?  You've got people who don't even care about Amiibo's in the first place carrying pitchforks and torches screaming "way to screw over your customers Nintendo!".  These are accessories we're talking about.  There is no reason for Nintendo to create a million of every single character.  It would be like applauding Atari for producing more cartridges of E.T. than there existed players willing to play it.

Fixed that for you. ^_-

XD Well played sir, well played.

Yeah, I know.  And it's kinda hard to explain, because on one hand Nintendo can be making so much money with this amiibo thing.  Imagine, if by this Christmas of 2015, Nintendo would have possibly sold 50Million plus amiibos.  I mean, that's not a stretch, right?  If we got all the Ness, all the Marth, all the Wario, all the Wii fit Trainers, Pit, Megaman, Jigglypuff(for f'ing sakes), all the Shulks, etc.  Who knows what could happen, but it seems to me at least that Nintendo is making this shortage an actual part of the Amiibo Platform.  We can't say perhaps that Nitnendo's Amiibo will have less traction next year by this strategy, but is just seems to me like Nintendo has chosen their strategy of scarcity.  That is where all the proof is pointed towards.  Perhaps they may strike it big, but right now they're going to the path of scarcity.

They may prove me wrong buy this Christmas by having a Ness amiibo readily available at my local walmart, but as it stands, I would have to fork over an extra 20 dollars just to get my hands on one.

I would've definitely bought an extra 5 or so amiibo if I were able to obtain them for their RRP, and that number will only go up the more they release that I fail to get. And that's just me. It's a total failure of supply and demand, and sorry, but I hold Nintendo completely responsible for that.

Responsibility is upon on all steps in the supply chain. Holding only one entity (especially if they are not at fault and we don't know who actually is) accountable is a knee jerk reaction borne of entitlement and ignorance of the process.

If the producer simply does not have the production capacity to make more, do you blame Nintendo?

If the retailers do not order greater quantities, do you blame Nintendo?

You used the "e" word. I'll try and let it go - even if it is literally my least favourite word and filled with poison.

If the producer lacks capacity to make more amiibo, then yes, of course I blame Nintendo, for using a producer with insufficient capacity.

Let's be honest, it's not a retailer problem. Unless you believe that all retailers are in collusion to keep ordering low quantities, you know that at the very least one of them would have said "Hang on a second, these things are flying off the shelves, maybe next time we should order a larger quantity of them". Besides which, even the Nintendo UK online store, which obviously cuts out the retailer middleman, fails to meet the demand, having only the common Amiibo in stock.

You know this sort of thing is a common business tactic in the toys market right? Beanie Babies made billions off of limiting stock and restricting store shipments. Now whether or not Nintendo is doing this, I don't know, but it's not exactly outside the realm of possibility.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Terrible practice. Thank god I don't support that toyish dlc.
