I really don't know! But, honestly, I'm not very good talking with females in general (yeah, shyness). So I suppose that it's logical that I haven't met a lot of female gamers lol. When I was playing WoW (I quit, it was like a drug... :P ) it's true there were a lot of female players in the guild (at least they said they were females haha), but I've never actually met them so, I don't know.

I think part of WoW's structure forces socializing, esp. when end-game content is concerned.  You have to communicate in-raid, spur of the moment, so you quickly get over shyness (I can sympathize to a degree...though, I'm simply more jaded/closed to relationships...I'd imagine its easier when you simply don't let that part of your mind surface), or you quickly find a new raid group that works for you.

Yeah when your raiding at times with a group you know and connect with then tis always a good laugh on teamspeak regardless of gender, but I actually have joined pugs with some of the girls from my own guild and they'll join vent/ts but keep their gender quiet if the leaders or loud kids in the groups seem to think the whole game is a sausage fest it's just easier to not shock teenage boys with the thoughts that some of the people they're communicating with are female, could knock the keyboards off their laps :D

Yeah, that's never a problem in our Vent server.  We'll just kick people from vent if they're acting like that.  Plus, not all teenage boys are like that, and I don't think we should be tiptoeing around it.  Continued immersion into it, tends to solve any fears/excitement over time.  Preventing exposure just ensures it'll happen to someone else down the road (plus, doesn't teach the boys anything).  But, I can understand not wanting to pull it into the game.  I just tackle those issues forcefully, so the problem ends before it begins.

Most popular genre? Social games...

Instantly invalidates this.

Indeed. If the stats include smartphone games like candy crush and PC games like spider solitaire, then it gives one view of video games and one definition of "video gamer". However many of these people captured in this study would not self identify as video gamers. I would like to see the stats around people who self identify as gamers, in comparison to the total number of people who play any form of video game. Is that in the ESA research?

i doubt... i am not sure what is her net worth but even if she have 200 million which is very unlikely i am pretty sure that half of it came from that game...

Hard to believe I'm a decade away from being of average videogame playing age. And still so many people would consider playing videogames as childish.

The delusion that only kids play video games is idiotic and needs to go away. This just proves gaming can be a hobby for anyone, with age and gender not mattering

the delusion  that only kids play games is as dumb and idiotic as the ''only guys play games'' or that girls dont argument lol

they all need to die and go away as arguments

I don't know much about PC gaming so I can't speak about that. But JUST console gaming? I doubt it's over 5%. I mean, I've met enough people to quanitify my own polls and it's probably BELOW that number. There are "gamer girls", but in my experience, they are very rare. And even then, most of them are sort of posers and aren't any good.

Finding a girl who is a hard core console gamer that can go toe to toe with a guy core gamer is like finding gold. I wish there were more.

I think I know why you're having such a hard time finding "girl gamers"...because you have weirdly strict qualifiers. Why does she need to be good? I know several girls who play console/pc games regularly.

Even if the average is lower than in my personal experience, I bet between 10-15% of "gamers" are girls.

How many 35 year old women do you know that are hard core gamers? Be honest now. How many 35 year old women, who grew up playing NES as little girls, stand in line at launch to buy a PS4 or Xbox One... just for themselves? Do you know of any? Because I don't. The only 30 somethings I know are all males. By this point (my age) women have all "grown out of it." And if you can grow out of it, you weren't really hard core to begin with imo.

I may be wrong about 5%... but it's somewhere near the basement. It could be 10%... 15% maybe, like you said But it's low if I had to guess. I'd like a real poll and study done though so we could see.

Made $1.6m in the first 5 days it was available only in English, that was June of last year, not sure if it grew much after launch since I don't keep too up on mobile apps but Kenny West is planning to make his entry into gaming now too so I would imagine that has to have been influenced by how much she made from that game.

Keep in mind that mobile apps like that always encourage you to get your friends envolved so they spread like wildfire after launch.

I'll be honest I didn't look too much into the last two links but 2.5m daily users sounds like a load to me from the thinkgaming link.

Which leads me to what I was saying. I've only met on girl who was a gamer and she was 19 a couple years ago. But she wasn't the type that would come over and kick your ass in Mortal Kombat. She liked RPGs. Most girls that game, aren't as hard core as we are. Some are, but very few. Hence why there are so very few girls on this board. I suspect if there were more of them, they'd all be in this thread... all of them lol.

I may be wrong about 5%... but it's somewhere near the basement. It could be 10%... 15% maybe, like you said But it's low if I had to guess. I'd like a real poll and study done though so we could see.

Not all of the current girls on this forum are in this thread as is, so the bolded obviously isn't true.

But I bet if you checked the stats of the active users on this forum, less than 10% are women. I would be shocked if it were higher.

People have said it already but including mobile gamers in this study really skews the results. People play most video games on a console/handheld for the love of the game, as an actual hobby. People play most mobile games to kill time, basically. I wouldn't call Flappy Bird players "gamers."

And what do they mean by "social gaming" exactly? Is that WOW? Candy Crush? Farmville? Are party games included? Definitely not the most conclusive study.

It'll be awhile before I figure out how to do one of these. :P

Nice to see that we're approaching a 50/50 split between genders in respect to playing video games.

Real shame that people are still trying to define "gamer", and "games" in such a way to make it seem like gaming is still just a boy's club.
