I really don't get how people can go so long without running into a female gamer...boggles the effin mind.  I literally went to Blizzcon w/ my Guild Master from WoW last year (and we're going again this year) lol.  My world would be lesser without good folks like her around.

Like I said earlier in this thread I do believe wow's population to have a large number of females in it, at a point during pandaria we raided with 4 girls on a 10 man team. That's "hardcore" raiding btw endgame mythic stuff, not just bouncing around goldshire pet battling like some people seem to think girl gamers do :D

of course you always have the models bringing the side down!

http://weknowmemes.com/2012/12/video-game-models-are-so-bad-they/

Arwan's the GM, and she's also on our main progression team.  Another group is literally led by a woman, our best PvPer in the guild, is a woman.  A good friend Icyangel is a woman currently going through Officer training in the Corps, so she plays when she can.  Haroula's just bubbly happy all the time and pretty much warm to everyone.   There's quite a few women in the guild actually, and not that it matters, but at least 3 LGBT.  So yeah I guess WoW just has a much more diverse clientele than your average game.

might be the crowds they hang around with

That's sad, oh well.  As I said, my gaming experience is definitely better because of people like Arwan.

I really don't know! But, honestly, I'm not very good talking with females in general (yeah, shyness). So I suppose that it's logical that I haven't met a lot of female gamers lol. When I was playing WoW (I quit, it was like a drug... :P ) it's true there were a lot of female players in the guild (at least they said they were females haha), but I've never actually met them so, I don't know.

I think part of WoW's structure forces socializing, esp. when end-game content is concerned.  You have to communicate in-raid, spur of the moment, so you quickly get over shyness (I can sympathize to a degree...though, I'm simply more jaded/closed to relationships...I'd imagine its easier when you simply don't let that part of your mind surface), or you quickly find a new raid group that works for you.

A good share of the people I party up with in CoD are female. Also a lot of the people I play NHL with, you wouldn't think play video games in the first place. I agree with Mummelmann, not a lot of these people make it known to others that they play video games

Pretty much this.  Invalid and fake do not mean the same thing.

No, but it's not invalid, either.  A statistic is a statistic.  Just because it includes information that goes outside the scope or interest of a forum like this does not mean that it holds no value.  It's only irrelevant for our purposes, not overall.

The only thing that annoys me is when people try to use the statistic without context, either to further their own agenda or because they don't understand that context themselves.  Mass media is especially bad for that but, honestly, they don't usually care about providing context for anything unless it makes a situation look worse.

I clicked on theESA.com to read the study and get more detail-  althogh they had more detail than what the cited article for this OP inclded, i was disapointed with the amount of specifics and depth/detail of context.  There were some of both but not nearly enough overall-    So some of the statistics they presented that might seem surprising at first become less so

I wish they would have added % s (age, gender etc)  re the top 20 console games in 2014 and top 20 PC games (they had stats for both of those but did not have top 20 mobile games or similar )

So most of their stats combined people/their gaming habits  who play games on devices that were primarily purchased for NON gaming reasons with people who play games on devices that were purchased primarily FOR gaming reasons- which makes a big difference

Honestly i was expecting a much better, more in depth and detailed study with far more definitions and context-  They surely had the ability to do one (maybe they did but have not published it - who knows)

It seems to have the data under the description of member benifits, and the only way listed to join is to call a specific person. It seems to target people in the gaming industry. Interestingly, it is run by the people that own and operate E3.

Yeah when your raiding at times with a group you know and connect with then tis always a good laugh on teamspeak regardless of gender, but I actually have joined pugs with some of the girls from my own guild and they'll join vent/ts but keep their gender quiet if the leaders or loud kids in the groups seem to think the whole game is a sausage fest it's just easier to not shock teenage boys with the thoughts that some of the people they're communicating with are female, could knock the keyboards off their laps :D

Hard to believe I'm a decade away from being of average videogame playing age. And still so many people would consider playing videogames as childish.

The delusion that only kids play video games is idiotic and needs to go away. This just proves gaming can be a hobby for anyone, with age and gender not mattering
