Not at all ? But the time is now, if they are waiting to see the bus likely it will pass them by.   Ar is a gimmick.

The time isn't exactly now, it's roughly give or take 1-3 years, at least to start reaching it's target market.

You claim AR is a gimmick yet you don't see VR as one and yet everyone saw it was one 10,20,30 years ago for all the times it passed on by, this time isn't going to be completely as different and who's to rule out that they aren't working on one themselves anyway?, it;s not like they have to tell everyone what they are working on every second of the day.

VR is dumb, the technology has been around for over 20 years, there is a reason it has never caught on.

I have to agree with that, I wouldn't call it dumb but it's not an easy tech for quite a few reasons.

I don't see much future in VR for gaming purposes except the occasional wow factor here & there. The effect of immersion is great, but it gets sickening quite quickly & it's not practical.

Doesn't help that  you look like a total dork while playing games with it...

If sony popularizes VR with Project Morpheus, it will be become a "now thing" and MS will be behind on it because Phil didn't take it seriously.

That's the thing though, we know that MS is researching VR and even developing prototypes behind closed doors, leaks have said as much. If Morpheus is somehow successful, MS will already have the research and those protoypes, they could probably have their own headset out within 6 months to 1 year after Morpheus, Sony wouldn't have that big of a lead. Better to take a wait and see approach to see how Morpheus is recieved, than to take a gamble and start producing expensive headesets that could lose money just to release at the same time.

No industry leader ever takes the "wait and see approach"...  if you're not pushing inovation forward, the industry will pass u by.  (that applies to all industries, not just video games)

Yeah, I think I agree with him. I don`t see VR really being a thing for a long time. So far it looks like it will be awkward to use.

You're right that there is some wisdom in playing it safe but that line of thinking on this could really hurt MS's position if morpheus/VR pans out. It would reaffirm a lot of people's opinion that the ps4 is the "go to" console for gaming.  That "lead" could convince more devs to go exclusive with the ps4. They will be behind on launching their own headset and more importantly, "games" for it. There's alot of indie devs making games for VR. Do you think MS is working on any games for it yet? Are they far in developement? There's pro and cons being the first to do something. It's the same with waiting it out.

I think that a lot of people (including phil) are underestimating this tech and how it could and probably will change gaming. Just because it's not SAO right off the bat doesn't mean it won't do extremely well in today's gaming and entertainment markets.

If VR does become popular it will be Oculas Rift because PC actually has the power to make the games. PS4 and Xbox One can forget about it. Cant even get 1080 / 60 FPS but its going to do VR?

the consoles won't be able to offer Witcher 3 graphics in VR, that is correct, but apparently abstract/simplified graphics can work very very well in VR and can offer an extremely compelling experience

Here's the way I see it. We've got console gamers moaning right now when a game hits their console that isn't 1080p (Battlefield Hardline for instance). If those people are that concerned about the gap between 900p and 1080p, what do you think they're going to think of VR when they realize that a 1080p screen a few inches from their face has less like half the PPD (apparent resolution) of what they're used to seeing on their TV? Will the coolness and newness of VR really be enough to get them over their resolution hang-ups?

Eventually VR will be great enough to be mainstream, we'll have powerful enough hardware in both consoles and PC's to output games at 4k resolution, and the price of 4K screens will be low enough to put them into VR headsets, VR will have been out for awhile so the library of supported games will be much larger. That is a future we're moving towards, no doubt about it. But is it really worth it for MS to take a risk by trying to be one of the first few hardware companies to release a VR headset, just to create a product that only appeals to a niche audience at this time?

Watch this:

This guy usually rants and raves.

Now hes giggleing and going "wow" every other secound.

And this is not really even that impressive a demo for VR.

lol. Imagine what it would be like to play VR horror games....

So I will see his jaw dropping at E3...

New technology lives or dies on the support it gets. You can either support it and give it a better chance of success or you can sit back and wait for other people to make it successful and then jump on the bandwagon. Great companies take risks.

I agree with him but even in a few years when the technology is finally there to make it happen, will the games be ready for it?

Sure, VR will be awesome for some games like FPS and racing games, but what about the other genres? How will it be to play a third person shooter, an adventure game, a RPG or a platformer with those headsets?

Sure, many genre's won't be able to use the head tracking and motion elements of VR. But the thing VR gives to every single game, potetnially, is full field of vision.

The other thing VR does for every game is lets you free up the TV without having to compromise and play on a smaller screen and possibly looking at the screen at a less comfortable angle. If my family wants to watch a movie then my only option right now is to continue playing on my Z3 using remote play. If I ever get a VR headset (unlikely) then I can play on a second screen and get as good or better visual experience than on my main TV.

VR can also be good for Co-op play without having to use splitscreen, or in the case of single screen (like Diablo) it will allow completely free roaming. At the moment second screen options (tablets, Wii U game pads and PSV) all mean a visual and screen position compromise. Potentially with VR the person who draws the short straw with Co-op will be the one stuck with having to use the TV.

VR interests me, but I'm not convinced it's worth the investment. And I suspect that's where a lot of people are at. Companies looking to commercialise home VR for entertainment still need to sell me on the idea. A head set will be a minimum of $300 here, probably more. I don't see any justification for spending that much.

VR will be a short lived fad and then disappear and end up in a drawer or closet like Kinect or Wii Remote/Move
