Forums - Microsoft - Phil Spencer - Virtual Reality Not Yet 'A Thing'

Well, I dont know if it is a thing of now or not.  But what I do know, is that I really REALLY wanna put my hands on it. And from what I've seen so far looks like that s"t is gonna be really fun.

And looks like the stronghold of it is gonna be horror games. I mean, from what I have seen so far, nothing can match it in that area.

Just take a look a these examples:

i hope and pray MS stay on their goal , unlike Xbox one who have turned 360 degree LOL. It will be funny if VR is success in near future and they will follow the trend eat their own word.

so basically what he is trying to say is "yeah its interesting, but its not important", in an indirect way. if VR actually becomes a success MS are gonna be in a really bad place, because while VR isnt a "now thing" its right around the corner, and the big dogs arent fucking around when it comes to it, Valve, HTC, Facebook and Sony are gonna be going all in.

Yep , that sounded really down played.

Xbox is gonna be left behinde when it comes to VR compaired to sony, basically just got comfirmed.

"Sure, VR will be awesome for some games like FPS and racing games, but what about the other genres? How will it be to play a third person shooter, an adventure game, a RPG or a platformer with those headsets?"

who cares if not all game genre are suited  for it?

If it turns out its the best way to experiance a FPS, and the market takes off while MS is just twiddling its thumbs waiting on others to see how things turn out... its going to be behinde from the get go.

"I agree with him but even in a few years when the technology is finally there to make it happen, will the games be ready for it?"

Its looks like the technology is here.... now, not a few years away.

Its just a matter of hitting the market with the right price & a good game to go along with it,... and you ll lunch the start of a new way to experiance gameing.

VR could be big, if such a wave was to hit the scene, you would want to be ontop of your game for it.

i agree fully with you.

Third person games play very well. Surprisingly so.

FPS play very weirdly and are difficult to get right (movement on sticks vs head tracking; your body gets confused). I played a great proceduraly generated horror game called Monstrum and whilst the VR makes it highly immersive, the basic movement is still controlled on analog sticks which makes it very disorientating.

As for the other genres it really does depend on how well they adapt to VR and the way they implement perspective.

The best games I've played on VR are all ones where you're in a cockpit and controlling a vehicle. Flight based games are going to see a revival with this tech imo.

Thanks for sharing. It's a relief to know those headsets can work well with other games besides FPSs. And yeah, using a regular controller to play with a VR headsest looks to break the immersion. That's why Sony and Valve have gone with motion based controllers.

And I also agree on your last point. Driving and flight games are the ones that will benefit the most because there are already proper peropherals for them, and the (very) fans of those genres aren't affraid to spend big money to further enhance their experience (multiple displays, special chairs, etc.).

@binary solo: Buying a VR headset "only" to use it as a secondary screen seems like a waste. It would be better to get a second TV and use headphones (thankfully the PS4 controller has a headphones pass-through).

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

And hopefully it never will be a thing.

I find statements like this weird. Can I ask why you hope it doesn't become 'a thing'?

The PS5 Exists.

There's a reason why Microsoft is worth $340+ Billion and Sony is only worth $30B. The difference between M$ and Sony, in this situation, is software.

The PS4 runs a proprietary OS while shortly, Xbox One will be running Windows 10. Now while I agree 100% with Phil Spencer's decision to forego any VR tech at this point in time (who wants to strap on a huge, goofy headset that needs to be charged every 4-5 hour if it doesn't already need to be plugged into a USB port?), if it does take off (which it wont), MS can simply partner with a company that is already successful on PC's Windows 10, and with some software tweaks and optimization, have it running on Xbox One in a matter of months.

Do you really think people are going to be lining up by the hundreds to buy Project Morpheus for $300? Of course not. It's a niche product and a fad that will burn out faster than virtual boy or 3D Blurays.

Face it, guys, VR doesn't have a future in the console gaming market and Microsoft knows it.

I'm sure my comment will be moderated or deleted simply because I'm agreeing with Microsoft on this one, but it is what it is.

The same reason so many people bitch about digital games. Because they are afraid of change, naysayers, or just plain haters.

My work team and I recently took a team outing to a full on fight immersion sim. The projector was clearly doing less than 1080p, but the experience was a ton of fun, and drastically better than playing on a pc or console.

MS is late to the game and trying to downplay it in order to save face. Its funny how Xbox apologists are trying to praise their dear leader for this PR move.

i agree with him
