If Morpheus is somehow successful, MS will already have the research and those protoypes, they could probably have their own headset out within 6 months to 1 year after Morpheus, Sony wouldn't have that big of a lead. You're right that there is some wisdom in playing it safe but that line of thinking on this could really hurt MS's position if morpheus/VR pans out. It would reaffirm a lot of people's opinion that the ps4 is the "go to" console for gaming. That "lead" could convince more devs to go exclusive with the ps4. They will be behind on launching their own headset and more importantly, "games" for it. There's alot of indie devs making games for VR. Do you think MS is working on any games for it yet? Are they far in developement? There's pro and cons being the first to do something. It's the same with waiting it out.
I think that a lot of people (including phil) are underestimating this tech and how it could and probably will change gaming. Just because it's not SAO right off the bat doesn't mean it won't do extremely well in today's gaming and entertainment markets.
