Forums - Nintendo - What reason do u have for not wanting Nintendo to unify their platforms?

What would be the effect on 3rd party if Nintendo tries the Fusion idea with a power similar to the PS4 or just a bit stronger? Would they port a lot of old games to profit from their handheld market, would they try and make new games for the console, would they ignore the system...?

They can't make a handheld with a 7870 on it for 2016, let alone surpass it. It's a 2012 GPU, that's against the laws of physics. Tegra X1 is basically trading punches with a 360 and that used a Radeon X1800 XT, 2005-6 tech.

The home console will be very watered down. I actually want Nintendo to make a system that could be a primary console and that means being technically competitive and having compelling third party support.

Then u are asking Nintendo to do something they have never done in 30+ years. Nintendo hardware has always, and I literally mean always, sold on the strength of exclusives.

NES, GB, SNES, N64, GBA, GC, DS, Wii, 3DS, Wii U, which one of these was sold on the strength of multiplats? None of them, they all sold on the strength of exclusives, whether that was 1st, 2nd, or 3rd party, it was always games that couldn't be played on other devices that caused Nintendo hardware to sell.

Read my post again, I didn't say it needs to sell primarily off the strength of major third party support. Anyway the exact same arguement could be made for the PS1+PS2. Multiplatform titles didn't become the norm til last gen, so of course PS2/Gamecube/Xbox+ anything prior sold primarily because of exclusives.

NES, GB, SNES, N64, GBA, GC, DS all had great third party support. NES, GB, SNES, N64, GBA, GC all were technilogically great systems.

Mobile performance still has to respect the laws of physics and some basic computing rules like Moore's Law. The best mobile tech in 2015 is Tegra X1 and even that's a stretch because it's only available in a micro console and not in a tablet. It isn't on par with PS360 yet, but fairly close. The most powerful SoC used on a tablet is Tegra K1. It is less powerfull than X1. They have beefy GPUs but lack memory bandwidth and specially CPU power.

From Moore's Law, we would need 2/1.5 years to double the processing power, with the memory bandwidth increasing slowly because there is the memory wall. With consoles consumption around 150W and mobile limited to 10W we have a 15X difference that puts a 6-8 years gap in power between these devices, aligned with the comparisons between Tegra X1 and the 8 year old tech on PS360. Wii U uses a 2009 GPU with some custom improvements so we could consider it a 2010 level GPU. That means that they will probably have a tablet ready SoC that's similar in power only in 2018.

Talking about Moore's law well there's 2.5D chip stacking from AMD and 3D stacking from NVidia, never know could be options for '16 or '17. But in the end, I'm willing to bet the NX HH to be near if not as powerful as U, with the home version a moderate boost from that.   Ninty can opt for a low powered APU, like Carrizo, for their home con and a similar structured chip suited for their HH, whether its off the shelf or slightly modified, the tech is certainly there.

I believe the talk is the Tegra X1 will be in a tablet too ... Nvidia just wanted to show it in the console form first because that's a first for them, but the X1 tablet is supposed to be unveiled in the next couple of weeks or something.

The Tegra X2 or whatever the successor is should be out this time next year too.

Supposedly though PowerVR's 7XT series is even more powerful than the X1 in certain configs (these are the GPUs that power the iPhone, iPad, and Sony used a now dated version of this for the Vita) and we should see these in the Apple A9 processor perhaps this year:

So maybe the GT7400 for the iPhone 6s Plus (about PS3 graphics) and the GT7600 for the next iPad Air (above PS3/360 graphics)?

i have only have one real reason. As seen with the decision to cut ice cllimbers from the smash bros, portables just can't stack up to home consoles. That being said i would still prefer that nintendo unify the consoles as long as it's done right. There are some great games on the 3ds, and i'm hoping, if all this happens, we see an average game cost of 50$.

Well mobile chipsets have come a long way in the last 5 years and the fact that 3DS/Wii U have no similarities in terms of hardware, it was of course going to be difficult for them to offer the same experience.

It's not unrealistic for Nintendo to release a handheld thats close to Wii U with a console variant 2-3 times more powerful than that with the same architecture/operating system/online infrastructure that can share a library.

here's hopin...

Unification is the only option, otherwise Nintendo will become portable console manufacturer only or they must invent a new gimmic like Wii that is really hard to achieve.
