Well mobile chipsets have come a long way in the last 5 years and the fact that 3DS/Wii U have no similarities in terms of hardware, it was of course going to be difficult for them to offer the same experience.
It's not unrealistic for Nintendo to release a handheld thats close to Wii U with a console variant 2-3 times more powerful than that with the same architecture/operating system/online infrastructure that can share a library.
When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.
